BROCKWAY TOPPLES SLIPPERY ROCK FOR FIRST PIAA PLAYOFF WIN

PUNXSUTAWNEY -- John Himes' 1-yard touchdown run with 3:01 left in the third quarter proved to be the difference, as Brockway defeated Slippery Rock 12-7 in the opening round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs Friday night at Punxsutawney.

It is the first-ever PIAA playoff win for the Rovers, who will meet Forest Hills in the second round at 7 p.m. Friday at DuBois. It was also the first-ever PIAA playoff game for Brockway.

Slippery Rock led 7-3 at halftime, but Brockway scored nine unanswered points in the third quarter to win the game.

The Rovers dominated the statistics outgaining the Rockets 344 yards to 188 including 243 to 79 on the ground. But Slippery Rock's defense came up big when it needed to holding the Rovers to two field goals and a touchdown.

But at the same time, the Brockway defense limited Slippery Rock to just one touchdown in the game.

That score came with six minutes left in the first half and gave the Rockets a 7-0 lead. Rich Lee caught a 42-yard pass from freshman quarterback Ben Collins to put the District 10 champions ahead.

Brockway, the District 9 champion, answered back late in the half with a 31-yard field goal by Jon Cantafio to cut the Slippery Rock lead to 7-3 at the break.

The Rovers then got to within a point, 7-6, on a 37-yard field goal by Cantafio with 7:20 left in the third quarter before Himes provided the winning points on a quarterback keeper.

Jeremy Sickeri paced Brockway's rushing attack carrying the ball 18 times for 88 yards. Cantafio added 64 yards on 13 carries, while Seth Rhed had 10 totes for 45 yards. Andy Martino had 20 yards rushing, and Himes had 28.

Himes was 5-for-10 passing for 101 yards for Ray Reckner's Rovers. Sickeri had three catches for 76 yards.

Dan Chistensen paced Clyde Conti's Rockets, who were also playing in their first state playoff game, with 59 yards rushing on 12 carries. Travis Sarver added 14 carries for 27 yards.

Collins was 6-for-12 passing for 109 yards and a touchdown while throwing an interception late in the game deep in Brockway territory. Sickeri had the pick.

Lee led the Rockets receivers with three grabs for 81 yards.

Brockway, winners of four in a row, move to 8-4 on the season while Slippery Rock finished 8-4 as well. The Rockets lost just twice after starting the season 0-2.
