FAST TOUCHDOWNS HELP COUDERSPORT DOWN CAMERON COUNTY |
AUG. 30 WEEK ONE - Coudersport 20, Cameron County 6 |
By Pat Lewis
COUDERSPORT If you blinked, you missed Coudersport's first touchdown. If you went to get a hamburger, you missed two more scores, one by Coudersport and one by Cameron County. The first six minutes accounted for 75 percent of the scoring that was to be done in Coudersportıs 20-6 win over Cameron County Friday night. Coudersport, led by running back Zach Hersheyıs 135 yards on 27 carries, held off a pesky Cameron County team that stayed within striking distance until late in the game. Hershey sprinted 81 yards on the opening kickoff to give the Falcons an immediate 6-0 lead. Cameron County responded by blocking the extra point attempt. The Falcon defense forced the Red Raiders to punt after only three plays and took over possession at midfield. Coudersport used the ground game to travel 50 yards for their next score. Hershey opened with a 9-yard run to the 41-yard line. Fullback Ross Simcoe picked up 7 yards to the 34. A 14-yard run by Hershey moved the ball to the 20-yard line. Four more short runs moved the ball to the 3-yard line where Hershey powered his way into the end zone. The conversion again failed, making the score 12-0. Despite the quick scores by Coudy, Cameron County was not yet ready to throw in the towel. The Red Raider drive started at their 27-yard line. Four running plays moved the ball to the 35-yard line. Cameron County quarterback Kyle Vogt then threw a perfect pass to wideout Scott Aikens who had slipped behind the Coudersport secondary. Aikens hauled in the pass and raced 65 yards for the lone Raider score of the evening. The extra point attempt sailed wide left making the score 12-6 just seven minutes into the game. From this point on, eleven turnovers highlighted the defensive struggle. Both teams kept giving the ball away but neither team was able to capitalize. Cameron Countyıs Eric Campbell and Coudersports Jeremiah Frederick both pulled down two interceptions each. Also joining the aerial hijackings were Camerons Jon Doud and Tom Malizia along with Coudys Craig Mancia with one each. And then there were the fumble recoveries. Coudersportıs Frederick not only picked the ball out of the air he also twice scooped them off of the ground. Also having fumble recoveries were Cameron Countys Adam Kesterholt and Jon Songer. The final score of the game came late in the third quarter following a nine-play drive by the Falcons that had appeared to be stalled at the Raider 19-yard line. Facing a third-and-long, Coudy quarterback Ben Cary hit Frederick on a
crossing pattern for a touchdown to give the Falcons some breathing room.
Again Cary hit Frederick for the two point conversion to make the final
score 20-6. |
