CLARION-LIMESTONE ROMPS PAST KEYSTONE
SEPT. 20 WEEK FOUR - Clarion-Limestone 48, Keystone 0
By Jonathan Shaffer

KNOX – Clarion-Limestone posted a 377-31 advantage in total yards against Keystone Friday, as the Lions dominated the Panthers for a 48-0 win in Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference action.

C-L (4-0 overall, 3-0 KSAC) topped Keystone (2-2 overall, 2-2 KSAC) in nearly every statistical category.

The Lions gained 266 total rushing yards to Keystone’s 19 yards and threw for 111 total passing yards to Keystone’s 12.

"We’re as shocked as everyone else," C-L coach John Kundick. "Our kids worked hard and earned everything they got. Our lines have done a wonderful job. They get the job done for us every week."

"We definitely had it handed to us tonight," Keystone coach Dan Reed said. "C-L just crushed us. They beat us off the ball. They beat us in every phase of the game. We didn’t deserve to be even 48-0 in that game."

While the Lions did not have a 100-yard rusher, Hayden Johnston ran for 80 yards, while Brandon Huwar gained 66 yards. Ben Brooks earned 51 yards on only five carries.

Johnston also went 5-of-9 passing for 87 yards. Huwar had three touchdown carries.

"We told our players that no defense can key on any one person on this team," Kundick said. "They’re three of four guys we can put in there at any time."

Meanwhile, the Lions stifled Keystone’s main weapons in quarterbacks Buck Neely, Billy Colwell and wide receiver Bobby Telesz.

Neely did not complete a pass in three attempts. Colwell was only 2-of-5 passing for 12 yards and had minus-14 yards rushing. Telesz had one completion for seven yards.

"We knew we had to get to the quarterback and not let their guys get to the outside," Kundick said.

C-L’s first touchdown was its second possession of the game.

On the fourth play of the drive, Johnston connected with Beggs on a 31-yard play-action pass to give C-L first-and-goal at the Keystone 2-yard line.

Huwar then rumbled into the end zone on the next play. Rocky Davis’ extra point gave C-L a 7-0 lead at the 7:44 mark of the first quarter.

The Lions scored on their next possession in unusual fashion.

On fourth-and-8 at the Keystone 24, Johnston handed the ball to Huwar, who was streaking left. Huwar then handed off to Beggs. As Beggs was rolling right, he found a wide-open Johnston for a 24-yard touchdown pass.

"Those play action passes really hurt us," Reed said. "They broke our backs."

Davis tacked on the extra point, as C-L led 14-0 with 1:36 left in the opening quarter.

The Lions continued the offensive onslaught on their next possession. This time C-L went 68 yards on eight plays for the score.

A 13-yard pass interference penalty by Keystone set up a 12-yard touchdown run by Johnston.

Davis added another extra point to give C-L a 21-0 lead with 8:24 left in the half.

C-L scored twice more before halftime. Huwar recorded his second touchdown of the game with a 10-yard run with 4:01 left.

Huwar’s scoring run was right after a 36-yard pass from Johnston to Beggs. Beggs ended up with four catches for 80 yards.

The Lions final score of the half was on a 3-yard touchdown run by Huwar with 40 seconds left, as C-L led 35-0 at halftime.

As the Keystone and its "K-Gun" offense shot blanks, C-L’s Davis did not help matters by consistently kicking the ball into the end zone for touchbacks. Davis kicked five touchbacks in the game contributing to poor field position for Keystone.

The Panthers went three-and-out to start the second half, while the Lions took no time in lighting up the scoreboard again.

Ben Brooks entered the scoring fray with a 6-yard touchdown run with 6:12 left in the thrid quarter. Davis missed the point after.

C-L scored on its next possession as well. Cam Speer increased the C-L lead with a 16-yard run with 11:41 left in the game. Davis added the extra point to give the Lions a 48-0 lead.

After the scoring possession, both teams entered most of their reserves. Many of Keystone’s reserves saws significant playing time in the second half.
