EMPORIUM – Friday night in Emporium, the Cameron County Red Raiders (3-1) once again proved that it is not the size of the dog in the fight.....but the size of the fight in the dog as they upended a much larger Curwensville (2-2) squad by the score of 15-6.

Red Raider quarterback Kyle Vogt had a game for his scrapbook as he connected with wideout Jonny Songer for a score and then he rushed for another. On the defensive side of the ball, Vogt also came up with two interceptions. But he was not alone. Cameron County’s tailback Adam Kesterholt rushed for over 100 yards for the second straight game and Eric Campbell hit his second field goal in as many weeks.

However, for the past three weeks, the defense has been the star of the game. Players like Eric Johnson, Pete Malize, Eric Ward, Jon Doud, Brandon Catalone, and Tom Malizia, to name a few, who don’t get their names in the paper because they don¹t score the points, have been propelling the Red Raiders in recent weeks. In the last three games, the Cameron County defense has held their opponents to a total of 12 points. Over the course of the first four games, the Red Raiders have come up with 10 interceptions and 7 fumble recoveries to thrust them to a 3-1 record.

The first score of the game on Cameron County’s second possession after a Vogt interception gave the Red Raiders favorable field position. Starting on the Curwensville 38-yard line, Kesterholt rushed two times to the 12-yard line. A Tide penalty moved the ball to the 6-yard line. Curwensville’s defense stiffened and moved the Raider back on three successive running plays. Cameron County’s Eric Campbell came on to split the uprights with a 28-yard field goal to make the score 3-0.

In the second quarter, the Golden Tide dodged a bullet as Cameron’s Adam Kesterholt had an 18-yard touchdown run called back due to an illegal block. Three plays later the Tide took over possession at the Curwensville 25-yard line and launched their only scoring drive of the evening.
A long run by Golden Tide tailback Doug Swatsworth and a penalty took the ball to the Cameron County 34-yard line. Using the trio of Brooks Collins, Nate Sipes, and Swatsworth, Curwensville methodically moved the ball to the 4-yard line where quarterback Travis McDonald got the call and took the ball in for the touchdown. But once again the Red Raider defense stepped up, as defensive tackle Jon Doud plowed through the line and blocked the extra point attempt holding the score to 6-3 in favor of Curwensville at the half.

"Curwensville took control of the game in the second quarter. They had a big size advantage and our kids began to feel it. So at half time, we challenged the kids. We told them that it was gut-check time," said Red Raider head Coach Brian Lovett. "We came out in the second half and hit harder and fired to the ball. That was the difference in the game."

Cameron County’s first possession after half produced the go ahead score. Starting at their own 41-yard line, Adam Kesterholt carried the ball over midfield to the 42. Five plays later with the ball on the 24-yard line, Vogt lofted a pass to 6-4 Jonny Songer in the corner of the end zone. Songer snatched the ball from the outstretched hands of the defender. The extra point attempt was wide left, leaving the score 9-6 in favor of Cameron County.

The final score came in the fourth quarter as the Red Raiders started at midfield and used an eight play drive to get the ball to the 5-yard line. Vogt took the ball in for the score making the final score 15-6.

Cameron County will be in action again Friday night as they host Kane.
