HYDE – The Clearfield Bisons awoke from their two-game losing streak and steamrolled visiting Punxsutawney, 42-0, in a District 9 League rout Friday night at the Bison Sports Complex. The Bisons racked up 364 yards rushing, 288 coming in the first half, as they led 28-0 at intermission. After the Bisons scored a touchdown on their first possession of the second half, the Mercy Rule was enacted. Dave Richards spearheaded the Bisons’ romp of the previously unbeaten Chucks, rushing for 225 yards on 23 carries. He scored four touchdowns on runs of 60, 3, 9 and 6 yards. Richards, who ran for 185 yards in the first half and did not play at all in the fourth quarter, was joined by sophomore fullback Josh Harbold in the century club. Harbold rushed for 104 yards on nine carries and scored on a 28-yard touchdown run in the first half. Clearfield (2-2 overall, 2-1 District 9 League) also got a defensive touchdown on Nathan Shadeck’s fumble recovery in the end zone to make it 42-0 with 6:15 left in the third quarter. The score enacted the Mercy Rule, forcing a running clock the rest of the game. Punxsutawney (3-1, 2-1) was limited to 104 yards of offense. Quarterback Joe Martin, District 9’s leading passer coming into the game, completed only 3 of 14 passes for 74 yards and was intercepted twice. The Chucks’ running game, thanks to three poor snaps totaling 33 yards in losses, was limited to 30 yards on 30 attempts. Dustin Guidash led the team with 41 yards on seven carries. Shadeck set up the Bisons’ first score with an interception. Two plays later, Richards raced around the right end for a 60-yard TD. After forcing a punt, the Bisons scored again on Richards’ 3-yard run with 3:37 left in the first quarter. Mike Scoggins’ interception of a Martin pass at the Bisons’ 2-yard line turned into a Clearfield score after the Bisons marched 98 yards on nine plays. Richards scored on a 9-yard run to make it 21-0 with 6:04 remaining in the first half. After stopping the Chucks on downs on two straight short-yardage plays at the Chucks’ 41, the Bisons hiked their lead to 28-0 on Harbold’s 28-yard TD run with 3:37 left in the half. Clearfield scored on the first possession of the second half, marching 54 yards on nine plays. Richards scored his fourth touchdown on a 6-yard run. The Bisons scored on the Chucks’ first play after the kickoff when a bad snap over quarterback Martin’s head wound up in the end zone with Shadeck recovering for the touchdown. Both teams play next Friday in non-league games. Clearfield heads to Bellefonte while Punxsutawney hosts Warren.
