DUBOIS- When you have two teams struggling as was the case Friday with State College and DuBois, something is bound to give. Under the lights at Mansell Stadium, something did give and it was all too familiar a site for DuBois fans. It was their defense. State High, running behind a strong and overpowering offensive line, racked up 302 rushing yards in route to a 49-12 drubbing of the Beavers. Curt Varner led the way with 12 carries for 122 yards and two touchdowns, on runs of three and 67-yards. Backup Scott Koch filled in nicely with four carries for 97 yards and also two scores on runs of 71 and 22-yards. For DuBois, it was more of the same doom and gloom their fans and coaches have seen all season. State High dominated the line of scrimmage, plowed their way to scores on their first three possessions for a 21-0 lead. DuBois tried to stick eight men in the box, but the offensive front for the Lions was too much to handle the entire game and with the two long jogs by Varner and Koch, the Beavers defense has given up five scores of 60-yards or more for the season. But it wasn’t just offense; it was State High’s defense that helped seal the deal this time around. The Little Lions secondary has been the focus of questions all season because of their lack of experience. Nathan Campolongo picked off two Beaver passes, returning one for a touchdown and Jason Ganter and Kevin Shuey provided key stops at certain points of the game. Wide receiver, speedster Mark Jones, unable for the most part to get loose from State High defenders, did manage to lead DuBois with six catches for 57 yards. Quarterback Joe Wanson, under constant pressure, was unable to get the ball anywhere else on the field. He was pressured heavily six times, and hit 11 times during the game. He was pulled in the second quarter in favor of backup Michael Hunter. If there was a positive for the Beavers, it had to be reserve runner Michael Stewart, who scored twice in the fourth quarter and led all Beaver rushers with five carries for 42 yards.
