BELLEFONTE – The Clearfield Bisons rolled into Bellefonte tonight looking for their first road victory of the season. If Bellefonte was hoping for a Bison letdown after Clearfield’s 42-0 shellacking of Punxy last week, they were surely disappointed. Not even the remnants of hurricane Isidore could slow down this Bison scoring machine. In the end it was Clearfield 45-Bellefonte13. Key to this game was relentless pressure by the Bison defensive line and Clearfield’s offensive line showing maturity and improvement by opening up huge holes for running backs Dave Richards and Josh Harbold. Clearfield would miss an early opportunity to score when a Rob Kulling field goal attempt would miss just outside the left upright. After forcing Bellefonte to punt, Clearfield would take over on their own 19. The very next play Dave Richards would sprint through one of those huge holes and race untouched 81 yards for the first score of the night. The PAT failed, and with 2:41 to go in the first quarter it was Clearfield 6 Bellefonte 0. On the ensuing kickoff Josh Harbold would make a TD saving tackle at the Clearfield 17 yard line. A personal foul against Bellefonte would nullify the return and Bellefonte would then start at their own 20. The Red Raiders self destructed from here. Jon Altemus would get a tackle for a loss on the first play, an illegal procedure call would push them back even more. Facing a 3rd and 16 with Bellefonte in the shotgun formation, the snap would sail over the Red Raider quarterbacks head into the end zone. Todd Duckett fell on the pigskin for a safety to give Clearfield an 8-0 lead. The first quarter would end on an 18 yard Mike Sayers to Dave Richards pass, setting up a 1st and ten inside the Red Raider 30 yard line. Harbold and Richards would take turns churning up the yardage inside, but they would soon face a long fourth down and Rob Kulling was called on a second time to try a 31 yard field goal. This one was true and through and it upped the Bison score to 11-0. Bellefonte would return the kickoff to their own 42 and once again they would go in reverse. Facing a 2nd and 11, a lateral pass would fall incomplete. Dave Richards wisely picked up the loose pig skin and Bellefonte looked helpless as they watched him ramble 36 yards for another Bison touchdown and a 17-0 lead. Bellefonte’s only bright spot of the night came on their next series when they finally figured out how to slow down the Clearfield rush. A draw play resulted in their first score of the night, closing the gap to 17 -7. Clearfield would get those 7 points back on the next drive when Mike Sayers hooked up with Mike Scoggins on a 36 yard touchdown pass. This would close out the first half scoring with Clearfield leading the game 24-7. Twelve seconds of the second half was all it would take for the Bisons to score again. On a first and ten from their own 37, Dave Richards would once again breeze through a huge hole in the line and take it all the way to the end zone. The PAT was good and the rout was on. Bellefonte was able to drive the ball to Clearfield’s 31 when they faced a 4th and 6. Craig Gardner would pick off a Red Raider pass and return it all the way for another Bison TD, making the score Clearfield 38, Bellefonte 7. Bellefonte would score one last time on a 38-yard pass. The PAT failed and with 6:38 to go in the third quarter it was Clearfield 38, Bellefonte 13. Clearfield would turn the ball over on downs at the Bellefonte 35. Any hopes of a Red Raider comeback were shortly dashed on the next play when Craig Gardner would get his second interception of the night. He returned this one for another touchdown to end the scoring of this contest 45-13. On Bellefonte's next possession Craig Gardner would get another interception, although he was only able to return this one to the Bellefonte 32. Clean uniforms would finish out the night and Clearfield would enjoy their ride back home after getting above the .500 mark for the first time since their opening game. Next week will find the Bisons on the road again. This time they take on cross county rivals, and another District 6 foe, Philipsburg-Osceola. |
