CURWENSVILLE HOLDS OFF BROCKWAY |
SEPT. 27 WEEK FIVE - Curwensville 14, Brockway 8 |
By Regis Felix – For D9Sports.Com CURWENSVILLE -- Brockway went into Curwensville tonight looking to knock off the Golden Tide for the first time since they both became members of the AML. Unfortunately for the Rovers, the Curwensville defense came up big all night long, and the Golden Tide came away with a 14-8 win. The Golden Tide led 14-0 at halftime and held Brockway without a first down in the opening half. In the meantime the Golden Tide scored twice. Their first TD came at the 3:34 mark of the first quarter when Travis McDonald connected with Derek Bracken for a 21 yd TD pass. Cory Bailor kicked the PAT. Curwensville struck again with 20 seconds remaining in the first half when McDonald again connected on a TD pass, this time to Gregg Gilbert for 28 yds. Bailor added the PAT to take a 14-0 lead into the locker room Brockway came out in the second half with a more determined effort. After stopping the Tide on their first second half possession, the Rovers took the ball and moved to the Tide 1-yard line where they had a first and goal. Then bad things happened for Brockway. John Himes was sacked at the 15, and the Rovers were not able to punch it in. The third quarter would remain scoreless with Curwensville holding the 14-0 lead heading to the fourth quarter. Brockway made it very interesting in the fourth quarter. With 8:34 remaining in the quarter John Himes connected with Tom Bussard for a 60 yd. TD Pass. Himes then ran in for the two-point conversion to make it 14-8 Curwensville. The Rovers stopped the Tide on their next possession, and Brockway started at their 28 yard-line. Himes got the Rovers moving with his passing. With time running out on the Rovers, Himes hit Tom Bussard with a pass that set the Rovers up at the Tide 3-yard line, and a penalty against Curwensville moved the ball to 1 ½-yard line. Again the Rovers looked like they were ready for a great come-back win with a first-and-goal. But bad things again happened for the Rovers and good things occurred for the Tide. Cory Bailor broke through and sacked Himes back at the 15-yard line. Then on fourth-and-goal Himes’ pass was picked off by Jim Redden at the two. The Tide then ran out the clock to pick up a hard earned 14-8 victory over the Rovers. It was the second straight AML loss for the Rovers who started the year 3-0, while the win broke a two-game skid for Curwensville. |
