REDBANK VALLEY ROLLS PAST MONITEAU
OCT. 4 WEEK SIX - Redbank Valley 33, Moniteau 20
By Jonathan Shaffer

WEST SUNBURY – Redbank Valley held a 33-6 lead going into the fourth quarter before defeating Moniteau 33-20 in a muddy and wet Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference game Friday.

Redbank (5-1 overall, 4-1 KSAC) saw its 27-point lead get cut to 13 points late in the game thanks to two touchdowns from Moniteau’s Matt Schandelmeier.

Schandelmeier recovered a fumble in the Redbank endzone and returned another fumble 10 yards for a touchdown.

Despite those miscues, Redbank dominated, accumulating 323 yards of total offense to Moniteau’s 60 yards.

The Warriors (3-3, 3-3) also went without a first down until late in the third quarter, and the their offense did not score any of Moniteau’s three touchdowns (2 defensive, 1 special teams).

Moniteau also punted the ball eight times, lost one fumble and had a pass intercepted.

"Our defense was outstanding," Wasilowski said. "They showed up to play and played very well."

"We definitely weren’t getting any push downfield from our line," Moniteau coach Steve Wilson said.

Meanwhile, Redbank showed a balanced offensive attack with 148 total rushing yards and 175 total passing yards.

Ron Geist gained 129 yards on 27 carries and scored two touchdowns. Shane Reed went 7-of-12 passing for 175 yards and two touchdowns.

"I thought we contained Geist fairly well," Wilson said. "(Reed) threw the ball pretty well. That was the best anyone had thrown the ball on us all year.

"I wanted (Redbank) to thrown the ball on us to win and they did."

Redbank’s Brandon Johnston led all receivers with 109 yards and two touchdowns on three receptions. Teammate Tyson Truitt caught the ball four times for 66 yards.

Moniteau could only muster 20 yards passing. Quarterback Clay Kohlmeyer went only 3-of-12 with one interception.

The Bulldogs scored their first touchdown on their second possession of the game.

A 23-yard reception by Truitt helped to set up a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Geist with 5:11 left in the first quarter, as the extra point by Brady Evans gave Redbank a 7-0 lead.

Redbank also scored on its next possession.

After a two-yard run by Geist and an incomplete pass, Reed found Johnston on a screen pass that went 66 yards for a touchdown to complete the three-play drive.

The two-point conversion failed, but the Bulldogs were up 13-0 at the 1:52 mark.

But Redbank was able to enjoy the 13-point lead for only 14 seconds.

On the ensuing kickoff, Moniteau’s Pat Rumbaugh returned the kick 95 yards for a touchdown.

"We play an awful lot of subs (on special teams)," Wasilowski said. "We could tighten it up by putting our first-team kids out there, but then they are on the field the whole game.

"We just feel the trade-off we have to make in order for them to get some rest is worth the risk."

The two-point attempt failed, but the Warriors trailed by only seven points at 13-6 with 1:38 left in the first frame.

The Bulldogs responded on the following possession with a 7-play, 63-yard scoring drive that extended into the second quarter and into monsoon-like conditions, which continued for the rest of the game.

A 23-yard run by Reed highlighted a drive that was capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run by Reed with 10:35 left until halftime.

The extra point by Evans once again gave Redbank a 13-point lead at 20-7.

After the Reed touchdown, neither team could muster a substantial offense drive before halftime, as the Bulldogs led at the halfway point 20-7.

Redbank received the ball to start the second half and took it 61 yards on 10 plays for another touchdown.

The Bulldogs again used a screen pass for a touchdown, as Reed connected with Johnston for an 18-yard touchdown pass.

"(The screen play) has been a big play for us all year," Wasilowski said.

Evans added the extra point to give Redbank a 27-6 lead with 7:55 remaining.

Geist played a large role on the scoring drive. At one point he carried the ball five consecutive times for 32 total yards.

The Bulldogs also scored on their next possession. A 23-yard pass from Reed to Truitt and a 10-yard run by Geist set up a 5-yard TD run by Geist with 5:23 left.

The extra point failed as the result of a bad snap, but the Bulldogs led 33-6.

While Moniteau continued to struggle on both sides of the ball, its defense was able to capitalize on some mistakes in the fourth quarter.

With Jason Smith in a quarterback, the Bulldogs faced a third-and-18 at the Redbank 6-yard line.

While in shotgun formation, Smith fumbled the snap in the endzone and Schandelmeier fell on the ball for the touchdown.

On the two-point attempt, Pat Rumbaugh rumbled into the endzone to make the score 33-14.

The Warriors attempted an onside kick, but Redbank’s Geist recovered the kick.

After the teams traded punts, the Bulldogs started a possession at its 25-yard line.

On the first play from scrimmage, Smith rolled back with the ball before having it stripped away at the Redbank 15.

The ball bounced back to the Redbank 10-yard line before Schandelmeier picked it up and took into the endzone for a touchdown with 1:35 left in the game.

This time Moniteau’s two-point attempt failed, but the score was now 33-20.

The Warriors tried another onside kick, which Redbank’s Shane Reed recovered to seal the Bulldogs win.

With the win, Redbank remains in excellent position for a spot in the District 9 Class A playoffs.

The Bulldogs will host KSAC-leading and undefeated Clarion-Limestone (6-0) Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

"They have just been dominating everybody," Wasilowski said about

C-L. "I just hope we can play with them. We have to be ready to play
