CURWENSVILLE – Dave Bundy’s 9-yard touchdown run in double overtime gave the Elkers a 26-20 win at Curwensville that kept Ridgway’s playoff hopes alive while basically distinguishing the Golden Tides.

Ridgway had gotten the ball in the second overtime thanks to an interception by Tom Buck after Curwensville had the first possession of the overtime.

The game was tied at 12 at the end of regulation, but Ridgway quickly took a 20-12 lead on its possession in overtime when Ryan Mitchell scored on a 5-yard run. Mitchell then ran in the two-point conversion.

Curwensville was not fazed scoring on 3-yard run by Doug Swatsworth and a two-point conversion pass from Travis McDonald to Greg Gilbert.

The Golden Tide had a chance to win the game late in regulation when Brooks Collins intercepted Elker quarterback Andy Kelly. Collins took off down the field, but a hustling Kelly tracked Collins down and forced a fumble. Curwensville’s Cory Bailor fell on the lose ball, however, giving the Tide the ball deep in Ridgway territory with 38 seconds left to play.

Curwensville was able to move the ball to the Elkers 10-yard line, where the Tide sent Bailor out to attempt a 27-yard game-winning field goal in muddy and rainy conditions.

Bailor never got a chance to kick the ball, as the snap was mishandled. Josh Mercer picked up the ball for Ridgway, but he was finally hauled down at the Curwensville 10-yard line as time expired in regulation.

Ridgway took an early 6-0 lead on a 2-yard run by Mitchell with 2:37 left in the first quarter.

Curwensville tied the game with 29 seconds left in the opening quarter on a 54-yard run by McDonald.

The Golden Tide then went up 12-6 at halftime on a 75-yard punt return by Swatsworth.

Ridgway created the tie halfway through the third quarter when Kelly hit Bundy with a 40-yard scoring pass.

Ridgway held the advantage of the stat sheet outgaining Curwensville 240 yards to 149. The big difference was in the passing game were the Elkers were able to complete 6 passes for 90 yards while holding Curwensville to just one completion for six yards. Ridgway also had 12 first down to Curwensville’s four.

The Elkers were also lucky fumbling the ball six times but losing only one, while Curwensville fumbled four times and lost two of them.

For Ridgway Mitchell ran 18 times for 72 yards and two scores, while Bundy rushed for 52 yards and caught two passes for 45 yards and a score. Kelly was 6-for-11 passing for 90 yards and a touchdown. He also threw and interception.

For Curwensville, Collins rushed 19 times for 85 yards. McDonald was 1-for-6 passing for six yards and an interception.
