DuBOIS - Despite the miserable conditions, it was a shootout at E.J.
Mansell Stadium in DuBois Friday night.
In the highest scoring game in 98 meetings between the two teams and the
highest scoring game between District 9 teams this year, Clearfield
outgunned DuBois, 52-24, and finished the regular season with a six-game
winning streak and 7-2 record.
The teams combined for 865 yards of offense -- 465 of it came in the first
quarter alone -- and five touchdown runs of 50 or more yards.
After one furious first quarter, Clearfield led DuBois, 33-10. Bisons
senior star running back Dave Richards had already rushed for 207 yards on
eight carries with touchdown runs of 57, 47 and 13 yards as the Bisons
scored on four of their first six plays from scrimmage.
Despite the fast start, Richards "only" finished with 210
yards on 16 attempts. He upped his season yardage total to 1,971 and
touchdowns to 34. Richards' 69 career TDs trail Kyle Cathcart's
district-record total of 73 by only four.
But Richards didn't even lead the team in rushing as sophomore fullback
Josh Harbold gained 253 yards on only seven attempts. Four of his runs
went for touchdowns covering 34, 57, 55 and 97 yards.
Harbold came into the game with 320 yards for the season.
Harbold's 97-yard run that put Clearfield up 52-17 and initiated the PIAA
Mercy Rule's running clock with 9:03 left in the fourth was more yardage
than he gained in all but one game this year.
Clearfield's offensive arsenal was too much for DuBois, which still had
its best offensive performance of the season. The Beavers gained 382 yards
and nearly put two runners over the 100-yard mark. Sophomore Vance Newell
turned in the Beavers' best running game of the year, gaining 113 yards on
only seven carries. He scored the Beavers' first touchdown, a 65-yarder on
his first carry of the game at the end of the first quarter.
Eric Stuby gained 98 yards on 13 carries and Justin Foltz rushed for 76
yards and a touchdown on the last play of the game.
After Richards torched the Beavers in the first quarter, the Beavers
limited him to only three yards on his final eight carries. While they
were keying on Richards, Harbold amassed some huge numbers.
The Bisons now have a week off before playing Punxsutawney or Bradford in
the District 9 Class AAA Championship game probably at Mansell Stadium
again.
DuBois closes out its season Friday at Altoona.
DuBois still leads the all-time series, 66-27-5. The game was the highest
scoring contest in the series, eclipsing the 68 points in Clearfield's
42-26 win in 1998.
