PORT ALLEGANY 29, SMETHPORT 24

PORT ALLEGANY – For the first time since 1980 the Smethport Hubber football team is 1-2. The Hubbers dropped to 1-2 after losing 29-24 to Port Allegany Saturday afternoon at Port Allegany.

The Gators (2-1 overall, 2-1 AML North) jumped out to a 14-0 halftime lead on the strength of a 5-yard run by Claude Haskins and a 1-yard run by Adam Rohrer.

The Haskins’ touchdown capped a mammoth 15-play, 90-yard drive for Port Allegany.

But Smethport fought back scoring the next 18 points to take an 18-14 lead at the end of the three quarters.

A 74-yard pass from Craig Kandare to Andy Rounsville on a second-and-14 play got the Hubbers on the scoreboard.

Smethport then cut Port Allegany’s lead to 14-12 on a 50-yard pass from Kandare to Mike Mitchell. A 16-yard run by Mitchell gave the Hubbers the lead.

The Gators punched right back in the fourth quarter scoring on a 62-yard pass from Craig Flint to Jeremy Niece that capped a six-play, 92-yard drive, the second 90-plus yard drive of the day for Port Allegany.

A 44-yard run by Rohrer gave the Gators some breathing room at 29-18, and they needed it when Rounsville scored on a 2-yard run later in the quarter.

Rohrer led the way for Port Allegany rushing 27 times for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while Flint was 10-for-18 passing for 179 yards.

It is only the second time since 1988 that the Gators have beaten the Hubbers (34-22 in 2000) and the first time since 1988 that the Gatos have beaten Smethport coach Carl Defilippi (He didn’t coach in 2000).

Port Allegany outgained Smethport 350 yards to 199 in the game.

BROOKVILLE 34, DUBOIS 13

DUBOIS – It is only Week Three, but the Brookville High School football team already has one more win than last season.

The Raiders made it two wins in a row and two D9 League wins in a row with a 34-13 win at DuBois Friday night.

Brookville dominated the game gaining 421 yards on offense to DuBois' 221 including 242 to 133 on the ground.

Matt Gilbert paced the Raiders carrying the ball 23 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns, while Cole Cook was 16-for-25 passing for 179 yards and a score. Brent Puller caught six passes for 60 yards, and Kerry Swineford had four catches for 53 yards and a touchdown. Even the Brookville defense got into the scoring act with Brent Berfield scoring on a 33-yard interception return.

The good news for DuBois was that the Beavers were finally able to score on offense with Joe Wanson hitting Mark Jones with a 34-yard pass to give DuBois a 7-0 lead at the end of one quarter.

After Brookville tied the game on a 1-yard run by Bill Morrison, DuBois picked up a second touchdown on offense when Vance Newell ran for 16 yards.

It was all Brookville after that, as a 12-yard pass from Cook to Swineford brought the Raiders to within a point, 14-13, at halftime.

Runs of 20 and 53 yards by Gilbert in the third quarter gave the Raiders the lead, and Berfield's interception return sealed the deal.

Wanson was 6-for-17 for 88 yards and a touchdown while throwing three interceptions for DuBois. Jones caught three passes for 67 yards and a touchdown, and Justin Foltz ran six times for 58 yards.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 42, WEST SHAMOKIN 7

The Lions tied the game on a 19-yard pass from Johnston to Brad Beggs late in the first quarter and then took the lead in the second quarter on a 6-yard run by Huwar. A 70-yard run by Huwar with 4:45 left before halftime have the Lions a 21-7 halftime lead.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 20, BRADFORD 0

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Punxsutawney used an opportunistic offense and a defense that came up big when it was needed in a 20-0 win over Bradford in D9 League action Friday night at Punxsutawney.

The Chucks (3-0 overall, 2-0 D9 League) managed just three more yards of offense (255-252) than the Owls (0-3, 0-2) but used big plays on offense to score their points.

Quarterback Joe Martin scored Punxsutawney’s first touchdown with only 14 seconds left in the first half on a 9-yard run. A 51-yard pass from Martin to Dustin Guidash set up the touchdown, and at halftime it was 7-0 Punxsutawney.

In the second half, the Chucks increased the lead to 13-0 on the first play of the fourth quarter when Martin hit Michael Sayers with a 35-yard scoring toss.

A 21-yard touchdown run by Guidash with 2:56 left to play closed out the scoring.

Punxsutawney’s offense was able to do what it did because the Chucks defense came up big when it needed to.

Five times during the game Bradford penetrated across the Punxsutawney 35-yard line and twice the Owls got inside the 10. But on each occasion, the Chucks defense stiffened and did not allow the Owls any points.

The first Bradford opportunity came early in the game when the Owls marched to the Punxsutawney 7-yard line. But Jeff Dean recovered a Bradford fumble at the seven to end the drive.

Late in the first half after Punxsutawney had scored, Bradford marched to the Chucks 21-yard line. But this time the clock ran out stopping the Owls.

In the second half, the Owls drove into Punxsutawney territory on the first drive of the half only to see a Jake Long pass intercepted by Matt Lantz at the 27-yard line.

Later in the half, Bradford drove to the Punxsutawney 35-yard line but was stopped on a fourth-and-1 run.

Finally late in the game with Punxsutawney leading 20-0, Bradford managed to get to the Punxsutawney 4-yard line before one again failing on a fourth-down play.
