WEST SUNBURY – There’s a new coach at Moniteau this season, and he brings a new look offensively for the Warriors with him.

Steve Wilson, who played on one of the final East Brady football teams, has taken over the reigns at Moniteau, and Wilson has scrapped the Warriors run first offense in favor of the West Coast Offense.

"We had to switch to the West Coast offense because of the type of athletes we have," Wilson said. "We have good speed at running back and receiver, but we don’t have enough speed on the line to run the Wing-T offense they ran last year. We decided to run more out of the "I" and one-back sets to better suit our players."

Wilson said the players have picked up the new offense quickly.

"The kids have picked up this offense much faster than anticipated," Wilson said. "The blocking is totally different this year, so it has taken time to come together. Hopefully we will be firing on all cylinders by opening night."

Top help his team, especially his quarterbacks, pick up the West Coast Offense, Wilson has brought in his former East Brady teammate Chris Weibel as quarterbacks coach. Weibel, who stared at Clarion University, has played professional in a couple of different arena football leagues and was the starting quarterback for the Greensboro team in Arena Football League II this past summer.

The player Weibel has been working with the most is starting quarterback Clay Kohlmeyer, who is a converted wide receiver.

"Clay has been becoming more and more confident with the West Coast offense," Wilson said. "His throwing ability has greatly increased under the guidance of Chris Weibel."

Kohlmeyer’s primary target on offense could be wide receiver Pat Rumbaugh.

"Pat is very fast at the flanker position," Wilson said. "He will also return kicks and punts for us."

In the backfield, the Warriors will go with Ben Elliot, a 231-pound fullback.

"Ben is a big, tough fullback," Wilson said. "He should wear down defense. He is not only big, but he is one of the fastest kids on the team. On defense he will start at nose guard for us."

Another key player for Moniteau will be center/inside linebacker Rob Flick.

"The kids voted Rob a captain even though he is a junior," Wilson said. "He is the heart of the team. He has picked up the offense and defense quickly and is the general on the offensive line. Defensively he has a great flow for a big linebacker."

Wilson said be believes Moniteau will be better than what a lot of people are expecting them to be.

"We graduated every starting lineman," Wilson said. "But the younger kids have worked hard and should be able to fill the voids."

Moniteau opens its season Friday night Aug. 30 when it hosts A-C Valley at 7 p.m.
