WEEK THREE PREVIEW STORIES

Sept. 12-13

By Chris Rossetti

SHIPPENVILLE – Ready or not, the 2003 high school football season reaches the 1/3 mark this weekend with 15 games on the schedule between District 9 league teams.

The first two weeks were marked contrasts. Bad weather played havoc with offenses in Week One, but clear skies brought some offensive outbursts in Week Two.

Week Three features some top-notch contests including the two feature games of the week when Port Allegany (2-0) visits Smethport (2-0) in an AML North showdown and DuBois (1-1) travels to Brookville (2-0) in a key D9 League game. Also on the docket is one of the longest running rivalries in District 9 when Redbank Valley meets Clarion. The two teams have met every year since 1927 with Clarion holding a slight 38-33-5 edge in the series.

All of the games are listed below including links to the two featured games.

GAMES OF THE WEEK

LAST WEEK

Youngsville lost to Smethport 15-14

Otto-Eldred beat Sheffield 27-7

GAME STORY

  • Youngsville has been in two low-scoring games this season beating Johnsonburg 8-0 without an offense touchdown and losing to Smethport 15-14. The Eagles defense has shown it can be tough, but the Youngsville offense has struggled in the early going.
  • After snapping a 27-game losing streak the last week of the season last year, Otto-Eldred has now one 2 of its last 3 games, and head coach Kerry Snow seems to have the Terrors on the right path. Otto was in its game with Ridgway in Week One through the third quarter before the Elkers pulled away in the final 12 minutes. Last week at Sheffield Otto-Eldred dominated a game for the first time in a long time. Now after two road games, the Terrors return home looking to build upon their recent success.

Collins has rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown in a game and a half.
  • Before the season Sheffield head coach Scott Park was reported by the Olean Times Herald to have said he would put his talent up against anyone in the AML. After two weeks Park is probably reevaluating that statement as the Wolverines were manhandled by Brockway 43-0 in Week One and by Otto-Eldred 27-7 in Week Two.
