WEEK TWO PREVIEW STORIES

Sept. 5-6, 2003

By Chris Rossetti

SHIPPENVILLE – Here’s hoping that Mother Nature brings better conditions for Week Two of the 2003 high school football season than she did in Week One. The first week was marred by rain, mud and lightening, which brought with it some game delays, one halted game and one game that was declared a final before the first half even ended.

Week One also featured teams who won the battle of the statistics losing the football games. Some of that can be contributed to the weather, some to Week One mistakes and some to teams just finding a way to win.

As for head into Week Two, a couple of big early season games in the AML South and KSAC are upon us.

In the AML South, the two preseason favorites, Ridgway and Brockway, meet in Ridgway for a game that could go a long way in deciding the AML South champions. Last season it was the Rovers coming away with a thrilling 21-20 overtime win.

Meanwhile, over in the KSAC, Karns City and Clarion-Limestone, the last two defending champions meet up in what could be a barnburner. Last year it was the Lions all over Karns City down in Butler County 42-6. Look for a lot closer game this year.

While those are the two highlighted games on the docket this week, they aren’t the only ones. Thirteen additional games are being played in District 9 leagues. A closer look at each of the follows below.

Brockway (1-0 overall, 1-0 AML South) at Ridgway (1-0, 1-0); 7 p.m. Friday

Karns City (1-0 overall, 1-0 KSAC) at Clarion-Limestone (1-0, 1-0); 7:30 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Coudersport beat Cameron County 7-6

Eisenhower beat Curwensville 10-7

GAME STORY

  • Last week Coudersport was outgained by Cameron County 330 yards to 147, yet both teams managed just one touchdown and Coudy tacked on the lone extra point of the game for the 1-point win. The Falcons struggled offensively on the ground gaining just 79 yards on 31 carries for an average of 2.3 yards per carry. They fumbled four times, but lost just one of them while also throwing an interception. Meanwhile, the Falcon run defense was allowing Cameron County to average 4.4 yards per carry. But Coudy bent but never broke.
  • Just like Coudersport, Eisenhower was outgained in its game against Curwensville 256-118. But the difference in the game was the leg of kicker Jason Passinger, who’s 35=yard field goal late in the second quarter gave the Knights their first three points and proved to be the difference in the game when Mark Collins scored late in the third quarter. The Knights allowed Curwensville to average 5.4 yards per carry but came up big when it needed to forcing six Golden Tide fumbles, four of which were lost while causing six total turnovers. Eisenhower turned the ball over just one time.

WHERE

Sheffield

WHEN

1:30 p.m. Saturday

LAST WEEK

Otto-Eldred lost to Ridgway 28-7

Sheffield lost to Brockway 43-0

GAME STORY

  • Despite losing its first game by 21 points to Ridgway, Otto-Eldred had to be happy with some of what it was able to do. The Terrors trailed just 6-0 at halftime and 14-0 at the end of three quarters. They also got some offense going gaining 216 yards in a well-balanced attack that saw 108 yards on the ground and 108 in the air. The biggest problem was the O-E defense, which allowed 406 yards including 309 on the ground on just 36 carries (8.6 ypc).
  • There was nothing misleading about Sheffield’s 43-point loss to Brockway. The Wolverines were outgained 286 yards to 48 while turning the ball over twice to zero for Brockway. Most of the Rovers damage was down on the ground where they rushed for 239 yards on 39 carries (6.1 ypc).

WHERE

Clearfield

WHEN

7 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Brookville won 35-21 over Moniteau

Clearfield lost to Bradford 22-15

GAME STORY

  • Brookville won this matchup last year, 26-18, propelling it to its first-ever District 9 League championship. The Raiders will try to do it again this year on the road. Four different Raiders scored touchdowns against Moniteau, led by two from fullback Josh Rakovan, and QB Nick Heschke completed 6 of 9 passes for 124 yards, including a 70-yard TD strike to Brent Puller. The Raiders racked up 321 yards of offense, but gave up 325. Of that total, 237 yards came via passing. The Bisons are a passing team, based on last week's performance against Bradford.
  • Clearfield is looking for revenge against a team that handed it its only D-9 League loss of the season last year. Since they already have a league loss this year, it's also a must-win for the Bisons if they have any hopes of winning the D-9 League. QB Tanner Kelly accounted for most of the offense in last week's 22-15 loss to Bradford, completing 19 of 31 passes for 260 yards. Five different receivers caught passes, including six from Mike Scoggins for 66 yards. The Bisons, unlike last year with graduated star RB Dave Richards' 2,500 yard rushing, couldn't run the ball against Bradford. Josh Harbold, who gained 726 yards last year behind Richards, was limited to 18 yards on 13 carries. Bradford gained 382 yards rushing against the Bisons' defense.

BROOKVILLE

LEADERS

QB Shane Heschke, 6-of-9, 124 yards, 1 TD. TB Matt Gilbert 8 carries, 66 yards; FB Josh Rakovan 8 carries, 47 yards, 2 TDs. WR Brent Puller, 2 catches, 70 yards, 1 TD

CLEARFIELD

LEADERS

QB Tanner Kelly, 19-of-31, 260 yards, 1 TD, 2 Ints.; TB Josh Harbold 13 carries, 18 yards; WR Mike Scoggins 6 catches, 66 yards; WR Nathan Shadeck 4 catches, 73 yards.

Clearfield hosts Indian Valley Friday.

Punxsutawney (0-0 overall, 0-0 D-9 League) at DuBois (0-1 overall, 0-0 D-9 League)

WHERE

DuBois

WHEN

7 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

DuBois lost to Central Mountain 24-14

Punxsutawney did not play

GAME STORY

  • DuBois is on a 15-game losing streak and would love to end it at the expense of its D-9 rival Punxsutawney. The Beavers had to travel to Lock Haven twice last week, enduring a suspension because of inclement weather. Central Mountain led 24-0 before DuBois scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns. The Beavers actually outgained Central Mountain, 253-219, but two turnovers and 100 yards of penalties hampered their efforts on a comeback.
  • Punxsutawney lost its first-week opponent Slippery Rock from last year and couldn't find a replacement, so the Chucks open the season one week later than everybody else. That could help first-year coach Mark Kirk get his team ready. The Chucks lost 21 players to graduation from last year's team that was the D-9 Class AAA runner-up and finished 6-5. Fourteen players are returning letterwinners, but only seven were starters.

DUBOIS

LEADERS

QB Joe Wanson, 7-of-11, 99 yards, 1 Int., 7 carries, 41 yards, 1 TD rushing; RB Vance Newell 15 carries, 61 yards; and 3 catches, 46 yards receiving.

Moniteau (0-1 overall, 0-0 KSAC) at A-C Valley (0-1, 0-1)

WHERE

Foxburg

WHEN

7 p.m. Friday

LAST WEEK

Moniteau lost to Brookville 35-21

A-C Valley lost to C-L 22-0 – Game called final in 1st half b/c of weather

GAME STORY

  • Moniteau got thoroughly beaten last week by Brookville in a game in which the final score was closer than reality. Brookville led 35-7 with four minutes to play, but Moniteau scored twice on the Raiders reserves to make it appear to be a closer game. In the end the Warriors did rack up 325 yards of total offense while Brookville amassed 321.
  • A-C Valley’s game with C-L was called with just under three minutes left in the first half because of lightening, and the two schools decided to call it a game with the Lions ahead 22-0. This is permissible under NHFS football rules if the two teams agree upon it. Any way you slice it, the Falcons were manhandled by the Lions allowing C-L to push the ball up and down the field while being held to negative 40 yards of offense.

MONITEAU

LEADERS

QB Clay Kohlmeyer – 13-for-26 passing, 198 yards, 2 TDs, 2 ints; RB Steve Saul – 16 carries, 63 yards, 3 catches, 42 yards; WR Eric Hilliard 3 catches, 66 yards, 2 TDS

Keystone lost to Clarion 15-8

Union lost to Redbank Valley 39-0

GAME STORY

  • Keystone lost a heartbreaker to Clarion last week in a game that saw the Panthers outgain the Bobcats 246 yards to 210. Outside of the first drive of the game when Clarion marched right down the field for a touchdown, the Keystone defense looked solid. The offense also looked decent running for 163 yards and passing for 83. But the Panthers had a TD called back on a penalty and also failed to score on four tries from inside the 7-yard line late in the first half. Keystone also drove from its own 5 to the Clarion 25 late in the game only to throw to incomplete passes as the clock expired.
  • Union couldn’t get much going on either side of the ball in its loss to Redbank Valley. The Golden Knights allowed 358 yards of offense including 155 on the ground and 203 through the air while mustering just 69 total yards of offense including just 48 yards on the ground on 22 carries (2.2 ypc).

WHERE

Olean, NY

WHEN

7:30 p.m. Saturday

LAST WEEK

Bradford beat Clearfield 22-15

This is Olean’s first game of the season

GAME STORY

  • Last week Bradford demonstrated a powerful running attack against Clearfield gaining 382 yards on 46 carries (8.3 ypc). Meanwhile the Owls run defense was airtight allowing negative three yards on 25 carries. But the Owls pass defense wasn’t quite as good allowing 257 yards on 32 passes (19 completions).
  • Because football in New York starts a week later than in Pennsylvania, this will be the first game of the year for Olean. Last season the Huskies were 10-1 and didn’t lose until the Class B West Regional. This year they have only four starters back from that squad and will probably have four sophomores in the starting lineup.
