SENA'S FIELD GOAL LIFTS PORT ALLEGANY INTO D9 CLASS A TITLE GAME

DISTRICT 9 CLASS A SEMIFINALS
NOV. 1, 2003 - Port Allegany 10, Coudersport 9

COUDERSPORT – Sophomore Trevor Sena’s 25-yard field goal with less than two minutes left in the game lifted Port Allegany to a 10-9 win over Coudersport Saturday night in the District 9 Class A semifinals at Coudersport’s CARP Field.

With the win, the Gators (9-1) advance to the District 9 Class A championship game for the first time since they lost 14-12 to East Brady in 1988. Port Allegany, who lost Class AA title games in 1996 (Redbank Valley 7-0) and 1997 (Karns City 13-7), will meet defending District 9 champion Clarion-Limestone, a 54-0 winner over Ridgway Friday night, Friday in the District 9 Class A championship game. A site for that game has yet to be determined. Originally the game was scheduled for Kane but has been moved because of field conditions.

Sena’s dramatic kick helped the Gators get some pay back on Coudersport who handed Port Allegany its only loss of the season 21-14 in Week Four. The field goal came on a fourth-and-4 play from the Coudersport 8-yard line and capped a 72-yard drive after Coudersport had taken a 9-7 lead on a 37-yard field goal by Nick Keagle.

Claude Haskins, who came into the game as questionable because of a knee injury, showed no signs of that injury in rushing for a game-high 204 yards on 40 carries. He got a key first down for the Gators on the game-winning drive when Port Allegany was facing a fourth-and-2 near midfield. On the play after Haskins got the first down, Willie Bova hit Jeremy Niece with a 25-yard pass to help set up Sena’s field goal.

Port Allegany got out of the gates first scoring on an 11-yard touchdown run by Haskins in the first half giving the Gators a 7-6 halftime lead.

Coudersport fought back on an 11-yard scoring pass from Scott Easton to Rob Cavalleri in the third quarter, but the all important extra point attempt by Keagle failed leaving Coudersport behind 7-6. But Keagle came right back to hit the 37-yard field goal to give the Falcons their only lead of the game in the fourth quarter.

Port Allegany, who outgained Coudersport 349 yards to 141, was able to go on the game-winning drive thanks in large part to Haskins, Bova and Niece.
