By Rich Rhoades

DuBOIS – The DuBois Beavers ended their 15-game losing streak and ruined the coaching debut of Punxsutawney head coach Mark Kirk with a 14-6 win Friday night at E.J. Mansell Stadium.

The Beavers got two big touchdown runs from junior quarterback Joe Wanson and played solid defense in a 14-6 victory over Punxsutawney at E.J. Mansell Stadium.

Wanson showed his coming of age as the Beavers’ quarterback. His 16-yard touchdown run on second-and-9 opened the scoring with 3:43 left in the first half. It culminated a 10-play, 72-yard drive.

His second TD run gave DuBois a 14-0 lead with 7:22 left in the fourth quarter. On second-and-10 from the 24, Wanson went around the right end, eluded a tackler and dashed to the corner of the end zone. Evan Greene’s second point-after kick put the game away.

Wanson rushed for 68 yards on 11 carries and completed 5 of 10 passes for 59 yards. He’s accounted for three of the Beavers’ four touchdowns this season.

Punxsutawney did make some noise, taking just four plays covering 59 yards to answer the Beavers’ second touchdown. Quarterback Stu White threw a 17-yard TD pass to Andy Snyder with 5:40 remaining. The Chucks missed on a two-point conversion try.

That was all the Chucks could manage as their final possession ended on downs at their own 20. A costly holding penalty negated a 21-yard pass play to midfield earlier in the drive.

The DuBois defense answered any other Chucks threat the rest of the game as Punxsutawney failed to take advantage of its opportunities.

Chucks kicker Ryan Bish missed a 24-yard field goal on Punxsutawney’s first possession of the game.

Beavers sophomore lineback Derrick Bundy came up with a big sack on a Chucks fourth-and-6 play from the Beavers’ 20 in the second quarter. That play preceded the first scoring drive.

Late in the third quarter, the Chucks failed to convert again when tailback Zach Bernat was stacked up for a three-yard loss on fourth-and-7 from the Beavers’ 12.

Bundy, Greene, Jim Hoover and Adam Lawrence recorded sacks for the Beavers, who limited Punxsutawney to 139 yards of offense.
