BEGGS' FIVE TDS LEADS C-L OVER WEST SHAMOKIN

STRATTANVILLE — Clarion-Limestone High School head football coach Todd Smith challenged his team during the week to turn it up a notch on emotion, even with his team coming off a shutout of St. Marys last week.

Smith’s Lions didn’t disappoint with a 60-7 walloping of West Shamokin on Homecoming Night Friday, running their regular-season winning streak to 21 games.
The Lions (4-0 overall, 3-0 Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference) scored on their first seven possessions of the game, led 27-0 after one quarter, 47-0 by halftime and scored twice in the second half that was played entirely with the PIAA’s Mercy Rule running clock.

You could say that senior receiver Brad Beggs was clicking too, scoring five touchdowns, four of them on receptions from quarterback Hayden Johnston and another on a run. He also had an interception.

Beggs caught TD passes of 23 and 39 yards and ran for a 35-yard score in the first quarter alone. He caught a 6-yarder in the second quarter and a 20-yarder in the early moments of the fourth quarter before leaving the game.

Beggs touched the ball six times and scored five times, totaling four receptions for 88 yards and two carries for 40 yards.

Beggs wasn’t the only standout. Johnston wound up completing six of eight passes for 127 yards, including the four TD passes to Beggs and a 6-yard TD run in the second quarter.

Senior running back Brendan Huwar rushed for 161 yards on 22 carries, scoring touchdowns on runs of 14 yards in the first quarter and 20 yards in the second quarter.

Huwar and Beggs have proven to be a deadly touchdown combination, racking up 15 of the team’s 19 touchdowns through four games. Huwar has eight and Beggs has seven.

Defensively, the Lions were just as good, intercepting West Shamokin quarterback Trevor Henderson four times. David Brooks led the way with two pickoffs along with Beggs and Rob Fusilli.

Henderson completed 16 of 29 passes for 162 yards, but couldn’t get anything generated until the game was out of hand. West Shamokin didn’t gain a first down until the Lions were leading 47-0 late in the first half.

The Wolves (1-3) were limited to 36 yards rushing.

West Shamokin’s only score came on Henderson’s 11-yard run in the fourth quarter against the Lions’ second-team defense.
