| By RICH RHOADES PUNXSUTAWNEY — A pair of juniors and a solid defense paved the way for the Clearfield Area High School football team in its 46-18 rout of Punxsutawney Saturday night. The Bisons (2-2 overall, 1-2 District 9 League) spoiled the first home game of the season for the Chucks (0-3, 0-3), piling up a 33-0 lead before giving up a Chucks score. Quarterback Tanner Kelly and tailback Josh Harbold combined for five of the Bisons’ six touchdowns as the Bisons (2-2 overall, 1-2 District 9 League) spoiled the Chucks' home opener. The Chucks (0-3, 0-3) lost their seventh straight game to Clearfield and third in two seasons. Kelly passed for 122 yards, tossing a 60-yard touchdown off a screen pass to Harbold to open the game’s scoring. Kelly also scored on short TD runs of 5, 2 and 2 yards. Harbold rushed for 221 yards on 25 carries and added a 4-yard TD run in the third quarter. He finished with 280 total yards. The Bisons amassed 419 yards of offense, limiting Punxsutawney to 223 yards. But most of that came in the second half as the Chucks were held to 43 yards and only two first downs in the first half. Punxsutawney got on the board in the third quarter when quarterback Stu White scored from one yard out. Zach Bernat dashed 68 yards for a score and Devin Mesoraco scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter, both coming against the Bisons’ second-team defense. Bernat rushed for 108 yards on only nine carries, 101 yards coming in the second half. Mesoraco, a freshman, ran for 85 yards on 10 carries, 77 of it coming on one carry that set up White’s touchdown. Clearfield enacted the PIAA Mercy Rule’s running clock in the fourth quarter when Nathan Shadeck ran 15 yards for a touchdown with 4:43 remaining. Shadeck played a part on special teams as well, blocking Mesoraco’s punt out of the end zone with 7:00 left in the second quarter to put Clearfield up, 19-0. Shadeck nearly blocked a couple of other punts and helped cause a couple of erratic punt snaps that forced Mesoraco to run or pass, failing to get a first down. Prior to Shadeck’s blocked punt, Ryan Johnson kicked a 25-yard field goal to put Clearfield up 17-0. NOTES: Both teams play this Friday. Clearfield hosts Bellefonte and Punxsutawney travels to Warren. ... The Bisons recorded four sacks. Tyson Johnson, James Hinchcliffe and Harbold each had a sack while Shane Davis and Scott Hall shared one. … Punxsutawney still leads the all-time series 41-38-3, but hasn't beaten Clearfield since 1997.
