TRICK PLAY HELPS PUNXSUTAWNEY PICK UP FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

ST. MARYS – Devin Mesoraco’s threw a 38-yard halfback option touchdown pass to Andy Snyder on fourth-and-16 with 2:09 left in the game to give Punxsutawney its first win of the season 36-28 over winless St. Marys Friday night in St. Marys.

The trick play came with the game tied at 28 after St. Marys had rallied from a 28-13 fourth-quarter deficit to tie the game.

Punxsutawney (1-5 overall, 1-3 D9 League) had taken the 28-13 lead on a 7-yard scoring run by Zack Bernat three seconds into the fourth quarter.

But St. Marys rallied getting to within eight points on a 23-yard run by Bobby Kopp with 10:12 left. The Dutchmen (0-7, 0-4) then tied the game with 7:14 left to play when Lucas Wendel hit Adam Geer with a 17-yard scoring pass, and Brian Cogley scored on a two-point conversion run.

But Punxsutawney answered back by twice converting long plays, first on third-and-11 and then on the fourth-and-16, to take the lead for good.

The Chucks opened the scoring 5:34 into the game on a 31-yard run by Stu White.

St. Marys went ahead 7-6 on an 11-yard run by Cogley with 1:56 left in the first quarter.

Punxsutawney then scored the first two touchdowns of the second quarter on a 25-yard run by Bernat and a 21-yard run by White to take a 20-7 lead before St. Marys cut the deficit to 10 points at halftime on a 25-yard field goal by Tristan Mulcahy.

A 32-yard field goal by Mulcahy made it 20-13 with 6:00 left in the third quarter before Bernat’s early fourth-quarter run gave the Chucks the 15-point lead.

Bernat led all rushers with 23 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns. He also had one catch for 37 yards.

White had 18 carries for 100 yards and two touchdowns and was also 4-for-13 passing for 92 yards. Snyder had three catches for 76 yards.

Cogley led St. Marys with 22 carries for 108 yards and one touchdown.
