CLEARFIELD TOPPLES DUBOIS WITH BIG SECOND HALF

OCT. 24, 2003 - Clearfield 40, DuBois 21

HYDE — Nine turnovers, 703 yards of offense and 61 points.

Considering that four games over the last 10 meetings between DuBois and Clearfield have produced the four highest scoring games in the 99-game history of the rivalry, Friday night’s numbers weren’t surprising.

The numbers added up to a Clearfield victory as the Bisons beat the Beavers 40-21 in the regular season finale at the Bison Sports Complex.

Key numbers for Clearfield: 21 points off six DuBois turnovers, 276 yards passing from quarterback Tanner Kelly, and 102 yards rushing and three touchdowns from Josh Harbold.

The Bisons (7-2 overall, 3-2 District 9 League) take a seven-game winning streak into the District 9 Class AAA Championship game in two weeks against Bradford.

The Bisons didn’t put the game away until the second half when DuBois (2-7, 2-3) turned the ball over in its first three possessions. Clearfield scored on two of them and turned a slim 19-14 halftime lead into a 33-14 advantage midway through the fourth quarter.

Relying on their running game, the Beavers gained 233 yards. Juniors Mike Stewart and Vance Newell did most of the work. Stewart bullied and banged his way to a career-high 160 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown while Newell gained 70 on 15 attempts with two touchdowns.

Even though the Beavers were running the ball effectively, they couldn’t overcome their turnovers or stop the Bisons’ offense.

Kelly did most of his damage in the first half, throwing for 221 yards. His touchdown came on a 77-yard pass to Mike Scoggins that put the Bisons up 19-7 with 4:55 left in the second quarter. Kelly completed 12 of 16 passes, which included an interception.

Kelly’s receivers, Scoggins and Nathan Shadeck, had big nights. Scoggins caught four passes for 143 yards and Shadeck had five receptions for 106 yards.

Harbold, who was limited to 34 yards in the first half, was the featured piece of the Bisons’ offense in the second half and finished with 102 yards on 17 carries. He rushed for a 12-yard touchdown in the first half and scored on runs of 20 and 1 yards in the second half.

The game began with a fast and hectic pace without any scoring. Five turnovers occured in the first quarter alone, including the first two posessions for each team.

Clearfield missed on a scoring chance when Kelly hit Shadeck with a pass, but a 44-yard completion ended with Shadeck fumbling and the Beavers recovering at their own 1.

Following the Bisons stalling on a fourth-and-11 at the Beavers’ 13, the Clearfield defense produced the first touchdown when Beavers quarterback Joe Wanson was hit at his own 8 and fumbled into the end zone where Tyson Johnson picked up the loose ball.

Undaunted, DuBois tied the game at 7-7 four plays later on Stewart’s 10-yard TD run on the first play of the second quarter. Stewart’s 48-yard run on the second play of the drive set up his own score.

Clearfield answered with a score on its next possession. A 12-yard pass from Kelly to freshman Beau Ryan off a fake punt on fourth-and-seven sustained the drive that ended on Harbold’s 12-yard TD run.

DuBois, however, made it 19-14 just before halftime. A nine-play drive covering 46 yards following Ryan Liddle’s 30-yard kickoff return culminated on Newell’s 10-yard TD run with 42 seconds on the clock.

After Clearfield built an insurmountable 33-14 lead, DuBois scored its final touchdown on Newell’s 11-yard run with 3:37 remaining. It capped an impressive 78-yard drive and cut the score to 33-21.

The Beavers’ onside kick attempt went awry when Harbold fielded the high bounding ball and dashed 46 yards to the Beavers’ 10. Backup running back Shane Davis scored on the next play to close the scoring.

NOTES: Clearfield outgained DuBois, 413-290. ... Harbold went over 1,000 yards and stands at 1,081. ...
