CENTRAL MOUNTAIN 24, DUBOIS 14

LOCK HAVEN – It took two days, but in the end the result was the same as it had been in the previous 14 games for DuBois – a loss. The Beavers, who are tied with A-C Valley with a District-leading 15-game losing streak, dropped their season opener 24-14 to Central Mountain in a game that started Friday but was postponed late in the first quarter until Saturday because of lightening.

Central Mountain led 10-0 when the storm hit Friday and built the lead to 17-0 at halftime. The Wildcats made it 24-0 after three quarters, but DuBois finally found some offense scoring twice in the fourth quarter to make it a 10-point game.

Robbie Hanzley scored the Beavers first touchdown of the season with a 20-yard run, and Joe Wanson added a 27-yard scoring run.

Vance Newell paced the DuBois offense rushing 15 times for 61 yards. Wanson added seven carries for 41 yards and was 7-for-11 passing for 99 yards and an interception.

RIDGWAY – Ridgway found itself in a battle with Otto-Eldred for three quarters, but the Elkers pulled away in the fourth for a 28-7 win over the Terrors Friday night in Ridgway.

The Elkers led 6-0 at halftime on a 3-yard run by Tim Wright with 30 seconds left in the half, and then built the lead to 14-0 after three quarters thanks to a 13-yard run by Wright.

Runs of 13 yards and 56 yards by Wright in the fourth quarter made it 28-0 before Keith Barnett scored on a 7-yard pass from Luke Breese to close out the scoring.

Wright’s four-touchdown night came on 11 carries that saw him gain 123 yards. Kevin Sarginger added six totes for 46 yards. Garrett Viglione was 5-for-7 passing for 75 yards. Josh Shirey had two catches for 41 yards.

YOUNGSVILLE 8, JOHNSONBURG 0

JOHNSONBURG – Youngsville and Johnsonburg combined for only 248 total yards of offense and no offensive touchdowns in their season opener Friday at Johnsonburg, but Youngsville’s Ben Seely recovered a fumble in the end zone midway through the second quarter to give the Eagles an 8-0 win.

The Rams actually outgained Youngsville 129 yards to 119, but there was little offense for much of the game. Johnsonburg had 72 yards passing and 57 rushing. All of Youngsville yards came on the ground.

BROOKVILLE 35, MONITEAU 21

BROOKVILLE – Moniteau hung in with Brookville for a half, but in the end the Raiders were too much getting a 35-21 win over the Warriors in a game that was a lot more of a blowout than the final score indicated Friday night in Brookville.

Brookville grabbed a 14-7 lead at halftime with all the scoring coming in the first quarter.

But the Raiders scored 21-unanswered second half points to take a 35-7 lead before Moniteau scored twice in the final 3:51.

Brookville rolled up 345 yards including 219 on the ground to Moniteau’s 317 yards including 242 in the air.

Josh Rakovan (13-yard run, 10-yard run) scored twice while gaining 43 yards on seven carries to lead Brookville. Brent Puller scored on a 70-yard pass from Nick Heschke, Ryan Dinger scored on a 9-yard run and Travis Diener found pay dirt with a 17-yard run.

Matt Gilbert led the Brookville rushing attack with 64 yards on 10 carries, while Heschke was 5-for-8 for 126 yards.

Moniteau scored on a 55-yard pass from Clay Kohlmeyer to Eric Hilliard, a 6-yard pass from Kohlmeyer to Hilliard and a 38-yard pass from Shawn Manuel to Greg Kepplewith seven seconds left in the game.

EISENHOWER 10, CURWENSVILLE 7

Curwensville led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter on a 1-yard run by Nate Sipes, but Eisenhower made it 7-3 at halftime thanks to a 35-yard field goal by Jason Passinger.

Mark Collins then scored on a 3-yard run late in the third quarter to give the Knights the lead for good.

Sipes rushed nine times for 92 yards, while Dean Swatsworth was 2-for-10 for 22 yards and two interceptions. He also rushed seven times for 29 yards.

TITUSVILLE 42, ST. MARYS 0

TITUSVILLE – St. Marys was able to muster little offense in a 42-0 season opening loss to Titusville Friday night in Titusville.

The Dutchmen hung around for one quarter forging a 0-0 tie after 12 minutes, but Titusville scored three times in the second quarter mostly thanks to quarterback Tom Smith.

Smith got the scoring started with a 6-yard pass to Nick Prenatt. He then hit Matt Edwards with a 57-yard strike before running for a 78-yard touchdown.

In the third quarter, the Rockets scored twice more to build a 35-0 lead. Ian Tobin scored on a 23-yard run, and Smith hit Andrew Braun with a 26-yard pass.

BRADFORD 22, CLEARFIELD 15

BRADFORD – Bradford opened up the 2003 season in grand fashion dumping defending District 9 Class AAA champion Clearfield 22-15.

The game was really a tale of two run offenses with Bradford rolling up almost 400 yards on the ground and Clearfield managing less than 40 yards on the night. The Bison obviously missed last season’s D9Sports.Com District 9 Player of the Year Dave Richards, who graduated. Forty yards was an easy run for Richards last season.

With the running game not working, Clearfield went to the air gaining 270 yards.

Dave Snyder paced the Owls rushing attack gaining 190 yards on 19 carries while scoring two touchdowns on runs of 26 yards and 71 yards. Sean Hvizdzak wasn’t far behind racking up 160 yards on 18 carries and a 25-yard touchdown.

Bradford led 15-0 at halftime before Clearfield recovered a fumble in the end zone to make the score 15-8. Minutes before the fumble, the Bison had pushed the ball inside the Bradford 10 only to be turned away.

A couple of minutes after the fumble recovery, Clearfield failed once again to score inside the 10. Josh Harbold returned a punt for the Bisons to the Owls 5-yard line, but four plays couldn’t produce a score.

A couple of plays after the goal-line stand, Snyder broke the Bisons back with a 71-yard scoring run.

A touchdown pass from Tanner Kelly to Joe Davis with 18 seconds left in the game wrapped up the scoring for Clearfield.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 22, A-C VALLEY 0 (Updated 8/30)

FOXBURG – Clarion-Limestone opened defense of its District 9 Class A title with a strange 22-0 win over A-C Valley Friday night in Foxburg.

The game was called a final with 2:41 left in the first half after lightening had delayed the game.

Brendan Huwar, Brad Beggs and Erik White scored for the Lions.

Beggs opened up the scoring with a 10-yard scoring strike from Hayden Johnston. Huwar then scored on a 1-yard run, and White blocked a punt and then recovered it in the end zone.

Huwar gained 60 yards on 10 carries. Johnston rushed seven times for 27 yards, Beggs once for zero yards and Scott Davis once for 18 yards. Johnston was 2-for-5 passing for 20 yards with Beggs catching both passes. White added an interception for the Lions.

A-C Valley mustered nothing on offense finishing with negative 40 yards offense and no first downs.

REDBANK VALLEY 39, UNION 0

NEW BETHLEHEM – Shane Reed made a strong opening statement for Player of the Week by completing 13 of 16 passes for 187 yards and four touchdowns and running seven times for 38 yards and two touchdowns to lead Redbank Valley to a 39-0 win over Union Friday night at Redbank.

Reed threw touchdown passes of nine and 29 yards to Brandon Johnston, a scoring strike of 39 yards to Bryce Miller and a 4-yard TD pass to Tyson Truitt while also running for scores of 1 and 23 yards.

Redbank Valley used a 20-point second quarter to build a 33-0 halftime lead.

Truitt, the leading receiver in District 9 last season, had three catches for 29 yards, Miller had two grabs for 50 yards and Shay Magagnotti had three catches for 25 yards.
