ST. MARYS 37, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 6

ST. MARYS – St. Marys won its first game of the season in its final try of the year with a 37-6 win over city rival Elk County Catholic Friday night in St. Marys.

The Dutchmen (1-9) built a 17-0 halftime lead and cruised from there over the Crusaders (1-9).

Tristan Mulcahy got the scoring started for St. Marys with a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter.

ECC came back and took a 7-3 lead on a 33-yard pass from Andrew Blazek to Travis Herzing with 7:22 left in the first half.

But St. Marys responded with a 4-yard run by Brian Cogley and a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown by Lopaka Hoohuli in a span of 50 seconds to take a 17-7 lead into the half.

In the third quarter touchdown runs of five and four yards by Cogley made it 31-7 at the end of three. Scott Schatz then closed out the scoring with a 91-yard run with 2:56 left in the game.

Cogley led all rushers with 30 carries for 225 yards and the three touchdowns.

Blazek was 7-for-21 passing for 126 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Herzing caught four passes for 102 yards.

KEYSTONE 40, KANE 38

KNOX – Keystone outscored Kane 26-14 in the second half to tally for a 40-38 win over the Wolves in a non-conference game Friday night at Keystone.

Kane (6-4) led 24-14 at halftime thanks to two Jordan Martin touchdowns, but Keystone (4-5) got the momentum in the second half on two long kick returns by Billy Colwell.

First Colwell returned the opening kickoff of the half 97 yards for a touchdown cutting the Kane lead to 24-22. Then 2:37 late, he returned a punt 91 yards for a touchdown giving the Panthers their first lead of the night at 28-24.

Kane, however, went back in front on a 5-yard run by Martin with 5:02 left in the third quarter.

But Keystone got the next two scores on a 10-yard Sam Swartzfager run and a 30-yard jaunt by Colwell to take a 40-30 lead with 9:35 left in the game.

Kane tried to rally scoring on a 21-yard pass from Mike Giordano to Jake Anderson with 1:11 left in the game, but the Wolves could get no closer.

Early on it was all Kane, as the Wolves jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Giordano’s 5-yard run with 8:39 left in the quarter gave the visitors a 6-0 lead. Martin then scored on a 3-yard scamper with 3:13 left, and the two-point pass was successful giving Kane a 14-0 lead.

Keystone (4-5) got to within seven points at 14-7 on a 1-yard run by Buck Neely eight seconds into the second quarter, but a 9-yard run by Martin put Kane back ahead by 14 points at 21-7 with 5:50 left before halftime.

The Panthers once again closed to within a touchdown on a 6-yard run by Swartzfager with 1:21 left in the half, but a 38-yard field goal by Jared Cecchetti with 14 seconds left gave Kane a 24-14 halftime lead.

Swartzfager finished the night with 18 carries for 100 yards and two touchdowns, while Colwell ran seven times for 84 yards and a score while also returning the two kicks for touchdowns. Neely was 5-for-8 passing for 123 yards while running 15 times for 38 yards and a touchdown.

Martin had a huge night running 32 times for 176 yards and three touchdowns, while Giordano was 11-for-26 passing for 184 yards and a touchdown. Anderson had four catches for 86 yards and a score.

CURWENSVILLE 18, BELLWOOD-ANTIS 6

BELLWOOD – After a scoreless first half, Curwensville was able to get some offense going in the second half to knock off Bellwood-Antis 18-6 in a non-conference game Friday at Bellwood-Antis.

Gary Kephart got the scoring started on a 26-yard run with 4:22 left in the third quarter, and Nick Sipes added the two-point conversion run giving the Golden Tide (4-6) an 8-0 lead.

Curwensville struck again with 9:29 left in the game when Sipes hit a 32-yard field goal and an 11-0 lead. Then with 1:21 left to play, Nate Sipes scored on a 35-yard run to give the Golden Tide an 18-0 lead.

Bellwood-Antis (5-5) made things interesting when Shawn Weiand returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown, and then recovered a Curwensville fumble around midfield. But the clock ran out sealing the win for Curwensville.

Kephart led all rushers with 14 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown, while Nate Sipes added six totes for 59 yards and a score. Shawn Sopic was 5-for-12 passing for 65 yards.

Dan Houser had 14 caries for 65 yards, while Weiand was 14-for-30 passing for 162 yards and three interceptions.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 24, BELLEFONTE 18

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Stu White hit Andy Snyder with a 25-yard touchdown pass with 10 seconds left to give Punxsutawney a dramatic 24-18 win over Bellefonte Friday night in Punxsutawney.

The game was a seesaw affair with Bellefonte leading 12-0 at halftime but Punxsutawney scoring twice in the third quarter to take a 16-12 lead.

Bellefonte fought back going ahead 18-16 on a 47-yard Josh Jones touchdown run.

After the two teams traded possessions, the Chucks (3-6) got the ball back at their own 45-yard line with 37 seconds left.

That is when White worked some magic throwing an 18-yard pass for Zack Bernat to put the ball at the Bellefonte 37. Two plays later, White hit Cody Meenan with a 12-yard pass to the Bellefonte 25, and after spiking the ball to stop the clock with 15 seconds left hit Snyder with the game winner.

Bellefonte had taken the 12-0 lead on a 1-yard run by Jones and a 25-yard pass from Mike Putnam to Nathan Carson in the closing seconds of the first half. The pass had been tipped but somehow found Carson’s hands for the score.

Punxsutawney got back in the game on a 16-yard run by Bernat and then took the lead on a 31-yard halfback option pass from Devon Mesoraco to Snyder with 1:19 left in the third quarter on a fourth-and-6 play.

Bernat led Punxsutawney with 16 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown, while White was 9-fro-20 passing for 112 yards and a score. Snyder had three catches for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Jones led Bellefonte with 32 carries for 171 yards.

On defense, Ryan Mesanko had 12 tackles for Punxsutawney, while Snyder had 10.

EISENHOWER 31, UNION CITY 8

UNION CITY – Eisenhower scored 17 unanswered second-half points to expand a 14-8 lead into a 31-8 victory over Union City in a non-conference football game Friday night at Union City.

Brad Adams gave the Knights (5-5) a 7-0 lead 31-yard run In the first quarter, but Union City went ahead 8-7 on a 68-yard touchdown run.

Adams answered back giving Eisenhower a 14-8 halftime lead on an 8-yard run.

The Knights then went ahead 21-8 on a 1-yard run by Brysten Jones in the third quarter before a 3-yard run by Adams gave the Knights a 28-8 lead.

Adam VanOrd then capped off the scoring with a 28-yard field goal.

Adams led Eisenhower with 14 carries for 104 yards and three touchdowns. Bart Moon was 4-for-10 passing for 61 yards with Andy Chapman catching two passes for 50 yards.

PENNS MANOR 31, WEST SHAMOKIN 28

CLYMER – Ryan Murdick’s 30-yard field goal with 29 seconds left capped a 24-point comeback and gave Penns Manor a 31-28 win over West Shamokin in a non-conference game Friday night at Penns Manor. It was the first win of the season for Penns Manor (1-9)

West Shamokin (2-8) led 28-7 at halftime but couldn’t hold the lead, as Penns Manor scored 14 points in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth to get the win.

The game was tied at seven after one quarter thanks to a 40-yard run by West Shamokin’s Josh Morales and a 3-yard run by Penns Manor’s Evan Landis.

West Shamokin then scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take the big halftime lead.

Morales got the scoring in the quarter started on an 11-yard run. Logan Kaplon then caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Henderson, and Henderson hit Jerry Wilson with a 14-yard scoring strike.

Penns Manor started its comeback with a 1-yard run by Todd Trimble. Trimble then found Landis with a 55-yard pass to get the Comets to within a touchdown at 28-21.

Finally, Trimble hit Jake Altemus with a 10-yard scoring strike with just over five minutes left to tie the game.

Henderson finished the night 16-for-25 passing for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Morales ran seven times for 72 yards, while Kaplon had six catches for 82 yards. Todd Cessna added five grabs for 73 yards, and Wilson had three for 43.

Landis rushed 18 times for 124 yards to led Penns Manor.
