left in the game lifted Perry to a 12-9 win over Clearfield in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA Playoffs
Friday night at Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh.
The game was a far cry from the last time the teams met in the PIAA Playoffs when Perry, the City League champion, defeated District 9 champion Clearfield 61-0 in 2002. Neither team did much offensively as each team scored just one touchdown and together they managed 332 yards of offense. The difference was two Fazio field goals, the first coming at the end of the first half to give the Commodores their first points of the game. Clearfield (10-1) led 9-3 at intermission. The Bisons notched a safety in the first quarter when Perry committed an illegal block in its own end zone on a punt return. The Bisons made it 9-0 on quarterback Tanner Kelly’s 27-yard pass to Mike Scoggins with 11:53 left in the second quarter. That would be it for the Bisons, who lost standout running back Josh Harbold to an ankle injury at the end of the first half. He ran for 28 yards on nine carries. For the season, he finished with 1,812 yards and 26 TDs overall. Harbold’s career totals wound up at 3,688 yards rushing with 52 TDs. Perry (11-1) scored its first touchdown of the game on Desmond Brentley’s 18-yard pass to Gary Nolen. Perry misfired on a 37-yard field goal before getting the winning kick that was set up by an Andre Wright interception of a Tanner Kelly pass.
