Sept. 18, 2004

STRATTANVILLE – Clarion-Limestone racked up 36 unanswered first-half points while outgaining St. Marys 317-61 in the first half on its way to a 42-14 win over the Dutchmen Saturday afternoon at C-L.

The win was a state leading 29th in a row during the regular season for the Lions (3-0).

"We did some nice things," C-L head coach Todd Smith said. "We wanted to come out and spread the ball around. They were kind of sitting way back and gave us some underneath things. I thought we did a nice job today."

C-L had 18 first-half first downs to St. Marys four and ran 20 plays to 23 for the Dutchmen.

"I thought we were very timid the first part of the game," St. Marys head coach Joe Schlimm said. "We didn’t play with the kind of aggressiveness we need to. C-L is a very talented, very athletic team. If we had come out with little more aggressiveness, I think it could have made a difference earlier in the ball game."

Scott Davis scored three times for C-L, and Hayden Johnston added two touchdown passes and a touchdown run for the Lions.

Davis got the Lions first score on a 10-yard run with 10:04 left in the first half stacking C-L to an early 6-0 lead.

St. Marys had a chance to tie the game on its first possession driving to the Lions 3-yard line, but on second-and-goal Adam Geer fumbled the handoff. C-L’s Nate Tote recovered the fumble thwarting the Dutchmen threat.

"Our guys are good at creating opportunities," Smith said. "It was a good play."

Following the turnover, C-L went on a 9-play, 94-yard drive that ended with a 12-yard touchdown run by Johnston. Neil Reynolds’ 2-point conversion made it 14-0 with 17 seconds left in the opening quarter.

C-L added three more scores in the second quarter.

Davis got the first on a 12-yard run with 8:42 left in the half putting C-L ahead 22-0.

A 16-yard run by Davis and a 2-point conversion pass form Johnston to Kaleb Klosky, who was the snapper in the muddle-huddle play, made it 30-0 Lions with 4:54 left before the half.

C-L then closed out the first-half scoring with a 46-yard pass from Johnston to Klosky with 1:41 left.

In the half, Johnston was 8-for-10 passing for 134 yards and a touchdown while adding five carries for 86 yards and a touchdown. Davis tacked on 67 yards rushing and three scores.

St. Marys finally reached the scoreboard late in the third quarter on a 9-yard run by Geer cutting the Lions lead to 36-7.

Johnston, however, answered with a 36-yard pass to Tuffy Brooks that put the ball at the 1-yard line, and following a 5-yard penalty on C-L Johnston hit Erik White with a 6-yard scoring pass with 9:03 left in the game.

St. Marys junior varsity got the final score on a 9-yard run by Mark Lang with 2:02 left.

For the game, C-L outgained St. Marys 370 yards to 180.

Johnston was 10-for-13 passing for 176 yards and two scores while adding 62 yards rushing and a touchdown. Davis had 88 yards rushing and three scores on 15 carries, while Brooks had four catches for 74 yards.

Lang led St. Marys with four carries for 36 yards, while Scott Shatz added six for 25 and Geer 12 for 24. Steve Gaul had four catches for 64 yards.
