HOLLIDAYSBURG PULLS AWAY FROM DUBOIS LATE, 41-17

Sept. 24, 2004

DuBOIS — Using their game against Hollidaysburg as an early-season measuring stick, the DuBois Beavers learned that they're somewhere in the large gap between the three teams they've already beaten and the Golden Tigers squad that dumped them 41-17 on Homecoming Night Friday.
Although not pulling away until the fourth quarter, Hollidaysburg dominated statistically all night. The Golden Tigers racked up 485 yards of offense, ran 71 plays from scrimmage compared to 32 for DuBois and held the ball for over 33 minutes, making a whopping 25 first downs.
The Golden Tigers did not punt.
“We’re excited that we’re 3-1, but we really felt that we’d measure up better tonight,” DuBois head coach Lon Hazlet said. “We’re a little disappointed, but when you win those three games so convincingly, it doesn’t do you any favors when you play a team like this.
“We hadn’t seen that kind of speed. You can’t simulate that in practice. We have to just get better.”
Hollidaysburg (2-1), considered a contender in the rugged District 3-6 sub-region, was anxious to get back on the field after its game at Bishop McDevitt last weekend was canceled because of flooding conditions in the Harrisburg area.
Do-it-all senior quarterback Tyson Maugle ran for four touchdowns and passed for another. He ran for 118 yards on 17 carries while completing 10 of 14 passes for 185 yards with an interception.
Maugle ran for touchdowns covering 11, 10 and 9 yards in the first half and added a 20-yarder in the second half. He tossed a 29-yard scoring strike to Nick Delozier to close Hollidaysburg’s scoring late in the fourth quarter.
“We told the kids coming in that (Maugle) was the best player we have played against and he did nothing to disprove that,”  Hazlet said. “He’s very quick and my hat goes off to him. He’s a tremendous football player.”
Maugle hooked up with junior receiver Jared Colmer seven times for 123 yards, all in the first half. Senior running back Cory Roland also had a strong night, gaining 137 yards on 25 carries. He scored a touchdown on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter.
While the statistics make sense when looking at the final score, the game bore little resemblance to last year’s 42-17 Hollidaysburg win. The Golden Tigers led only 20-17 late in the third quarter before scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
In the little time they had the ball, Beavers used a handful of big plays and cashed in on one Hollidaysburg turnover to score their points.
After the Golden Tigers marched 88 yards on 14 plays to score on Maugle’s 5-yard keeper, Mike Stewart rambled 89 yards to score on the ensuing kickoff.
Undaunted, Hollidaysburg kept moving the ball and went up 20-7 on Maugle’s TD runs of 10 and 9 yards.
The Beavers made it 20-14 when quarterback Joe Wanson hit tight end Derrick Bundy with a short pass over the middle. Bundy then raced the rest of the way for a 44-yard touchdown.
One play prior to the score, Bundy threw a 16-yard strike to Lawrence off a fake punt on fourth-and-six.
The Beavers got to within 20-17 when they took advantage of Gabe Bowley’s fumble recovery at the Tigers’ 30. Wanson’s 18-yard completion to Chuckie Ritzie helped set up Mark Bowley’s 27-yard field goal at the 4:51 mark of the third quarter.
But that was it. Hollidaysburg scored on its next three possessions, driving 70 and 68 yards for touchdowns and scoring one play after a Wanson interception.
NOTES: DuBois hosts Coatesville this Friday while Hollidaysburg hosts Cumberland Valley. … Hollidaysburg leads the all-time series, 30-13-2, with seven straight wins over the Beavers.
