BROOKVILLE — After two and a half quarters of lackluster football, the Brookville Raiders flipped on a switch and made it a winning night against the visiting Punxsutawney Chucks on Homecoming/Senior Night in Brookville.

The Raiders (3-5 overall, 2-2 District 9 League) scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally for a 22-16 victory, their seventh win over the Chucks (2-6, 0-4) in the Route 36 Trophy game in eight years.

Levi Singleton and Travis Diener scored just over three minutes apart in the fourth quarter to lift the Raiders, who trailed 16-7 midway through the third quarter.

Brookville, however, limited the Chucks to just 57 yards in the second half, including minus-13 yards in a three possession stretch after Punxsutawney scored on its first possession of the second half.

The Raiders actually advanced to the Chucks’ 20-yard line or further on four straight possessions. The first two drives stalled on downs at the 20 and 6, but the Raiders finally found the end zone.

After a short Chucks punt, the Raiders started at the Chucks’ 23 and needed just four plays to score on Singleton’s 3-yard run. Matt Mohney’s point-after kick cut the deficit to 16-14 with 7:42 remaining.

The Raiders then forced a Chucks three-and-out and started from their own 36-yard line following a punt. On the first play, Raiders quarterback Nick Heschke threw a short pass to Money, who flipped it to Silas Wonderling to start a 37-yard hook-and-ladder play. The big play put the Raiders at the Chucks’ 27. Four straight Diener runs produced the score, a 2-yard run. Diener then ran in the two-point conversion to give the Raiders a 22-16 advantage with 4:39 left in the game.

The Chucks would reach the Raiders’ 35 with under three minutes remaining, but a big intentional grounding penalty on Chucks quarterback Dustin Dubensky halted the last-ditch drive and the Raiders held on.

The Chucks scored first when Dubensky capped a 10-play, 71-yard drive with a 1-yard run with 3:03 left in the first quarter. The Raiders answered with a 10-play drive of their own covering 63 yards. Heschke dashed in from 12 yards out on a well-executed fake inside handoff with 7:04 left.

Then a couple of bad punt snaps cost the Raiders. The first sailed over Diener’s head and out of the back of the end zone to give the Chucks a safety with one minute left in the first half.

The second forced Diener to put his knee on the ground to field the snap, killing the play at the Chucks’ 33. That set up the Chucks’ only second-half score. Five plays later, Dubensky hit Dylan Weaver for a 13-yard scoring pass with 8:51 left in the third quarter.

But the Raiders recovered and took control of the game. The Raiders outgained the Chucks, 244-180. Heschke completed 6 of 16 passes for 131 yards. Mohney caught five of the completions for 85 yards. Six backs combined for 113 yards rushing, led by Diener’s 36 yards on 10 carries.

The Chucks managed just 74 yards rushing, including only 10 yards on 12 attempts in the second half. Three Raiders sacks of Dubensky in the second half contributed to that total. Dave Foster had 31 yards on eight carries. Adam McCully was limited to 13 yards on seven attempts. Dubensky was 10-of-21 passing for 106 yards with one interception. Weaver caught five balls for 51 yards.

Both teams are on the road next Friday. The Raiders travel to Grove City while Punxsutawney heads to Clearfield.
