WEEK FOUR READY TO ROLL

WEEK 4 PREVIEW - Sept. 24-25, 2004

By Rich Rhoades

Week 3 is finally over.

The remnants of Hurricane Ivan wreaked havoc on last week’s District 9 high school football schedule. Only four games scheduled for last Friday night were played. Every other game was postponed, most to Saturday, but two were moved to a rare makeup on Sunday afternoon. Two more were played Monday night.

For most teams — especially for Clearfield, Brockway and Elk County Catholic who played Monday — it’s been a shorter week of preparation for another important week of the season.

For sure, 1-2 and 0-3 teams can’t slip any further under .500 as the season hits the midway point while the 2-1 and 3-0 squads can further bolster their drive to a playoff berth.

Seven teams remain unbeaten going into this week’s games, including the Clarion-Limestone Lions who now own the state’s longest regular-season winning streak at 29 games. The Lions face their biggest test of the season when they travel to Bradford for a non-conference game.

Other unbeatens are DuBois, Clearfield, Curwensville, Coudersport, Clarion and Moniteau.

In notable matchups along with C-L’s trip to Bradford, DuBois hosts Hollidaysburg (1-1) in its first test of the year, Karns City hosts Redbank Valley in an interesting Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference game, Clearfield looks to solidify its spot as the favorite in the new Mountain Athletic Conference-Seven Mountains Division when it hosts Bellefonte and Brockway heads to Port Allegany for a Saturday afternoon affair.

In other Friday games, Johnsonburg (1-2) visits Cameron County (0-3), Kane (0-3) hosts Coudersport, Ridgway (1-2) hosts Otto-Eldred (2-1), Elk County Catholic (2-1) travels to Smethport (1-2), Brookville (0-3) hosts St. Marys (0-2), Punxsutawney (1-2) travels to Indian Valley (0-3), A-C Valley (1-2) hosts District 10’s Conneaut Lake (0-3), Keystone (1-2) visits Moniteau and Clarion (3-0) hosts Union (0-3) at Clarion University.

Two games are set for Saturday afternoon. Along with Brockway’s trip to Port Allegany is Curwensville’s trip to Sheffield.

Here is a closer look at some of the notable matchups:

FRIDAY

Clarion-Limestone (3-0) at Bradford (2-1), 7 p.m.

It may be the most compelling game on the schedule. The Lions have the longest regular-season winning streak in the state at 29 games while the Owls haven’t lost at home since the 1999 playoffs, a span of 16 straight victories. The last team to beat Bradford at home was C-L’s fellow KSAC breathern A-C Valley.

It’s also a matchup of two teams that advanced deep into the PIAA playoffs a year ago. The Lions fell in the Western Region semifinals while Bradford lost to Pine-Richland in the Western Region finals.

And it’s a Class A vs. Class AAA showdown. The larger Owls will surely be motivated to not to lose at home against a smaller school. The Lions are most likely looking at this game as an early-season measuring stick.

While these teams bring a lot of recent success to the field, these aren’t the same teams from a year ago. The Owls lost most of their star players to graduation. Dave Snyder is the leading rusher, coming off a 52-yard effort in the driving rain in last Friday’s 28-0 win at Punxsutawney. But Bradford has struggled to run the ball averaging just 2.8 yards per carry this season.

The Lions lost some key players, but still have QB Hayden Johnston, who has passed for 640 yards and 10 touchdowns while completing 63 percent of his passes. Johnston has also rushed for 281 yards.

The Lions have outscored their opponents, 126-29, scoring 42 points in each of their three victories.

Hollidaysburg (1-1) at DuBois (3-0), 7 p.m.

After scoring three routs by a combined score of 107-8, the Beavers will be tested when they host District 6’s Hollidaysburg at E.J. Mansell Stadium.

The Beavers roughed up Brookville, 39-8, Sunday afternoon while Hollidaysburg’s game at state-ranked Bishop McDevitt was canceled because of flood conditions lingering in the Harrisburg area. The Golden Tigers opened the season with a convincing 37-10 rout of Altoona before dropping a surprising 41-26 decision to South Western, a District 3 Class AAA squad.

DuBois will have to get physical with a big and strong Hollidaysburg. Leading the way for the Beavers, who are averaging 250 yards rushing, is Mike Stewart (333 yards, 5 TDs). Quarterback Joe Wanson (200 yards and 3 TDs passing, 3 TDs rushing) will need to throw the ball to give the Beavers important balance.

For Hollidaysburg, quarterback Tyson Maugle is the playmaker. He’s passed for 318 yards and 3 TDs while rushing for 157 yards. Fullback Cory Roland (160 yards) is the leading rusher.

DuBois hasn’t beaten Hollidaysburg since 1997 and hasn’t beaten the Golden Tigers at home since 1996.

Redbank Valley (1-2) at Karns City (2-1), 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs try to bounce back into the win column on the road. This is also a matchup between two contenders in the District 9 Class AA playoffs now that the Bulldogs are back up from Class A.

Redbank Valley is coming off a 13-6 loss on Sunday to Clarion while Karns City blasted Keystone, 43-13 Saturday.

Skyler Smith (198 yards) and Brandon Johnston (173 yards) pace the Redbank Valley running game while the trio of running back Josh Fiscus (388 yards rushing), quarterback Steve Black (388 yards passing) and receiver David Black (273 yards receiving) lead the Gremlins.

Bellefonte (1-2) at Clearfield (3-0), 7 p.m.

The Bisons keep on rolling and head into their fourth game with the only winning record in the Mountain Athletic Conference-Seven Mountains Division.

Clearfield, 38-0 winners over Indian Valley in its MAC opener Monday night, play a Bellefonte squad coming off a 25-20 win over Huntingdon also on Monday night. The Red Raiders lost to Punxsutawney, 28-20, the opening week of the season.

Bisons running back Josh Harbold has rushed for 447 yards and 7 TDs.

SATURDAY

Brockway (2-1) at Port Allegany (2-1), 1:30 p.m.

The Rovers survived a test Monday night with a hard-fought 14-7 win over Elk County Catholic. Now they’ll have to go north Saturday afternoon and beat the Gators, who lost to Coudersport Saturday night, 21-0.

The Rovers’ ground game is averaging 247 yards rushing per game, led by Bobby Liddle (341 yards). Liddle has two 100-yard games, including 109 Monday against ECC.

Cody Anderson (230 yards) leads Port’s running game while quarterback Willie Bova has passed for 254 yards. Port Allegany has been slowed by a potentially season-ending injurt to running back Bobby Nichols, who tore his ACL before Week 1. Nichols has tried to play with a brace the last couple of weeks but has been forced to come out of each game because of the injury and his status for the rest of the season is uncertain at best.

NEWS AND NOTES

OH, BROTHER(S) — When Nick, a senior, and Nate, a sophomor, Sipes each ran for over 200 yards in Curwensville’s 48-0 rout of Johnsonburg Saturday night it got the Pennsylvania football historians scrambling for information. Nobody knows for sure if any brother tandem in the state has ever accomplished that rare feat.

The brother combination isn’t something that rare in high school sports, but Curwensville’s story on brothers has to be unique as four sets of brothers are on the roster. Along with the Sipes are senior twin brothers Dean and Doug Swatsworth, senior Brad and sophomore Shawn Sopic and junior Josh and sophomore Sam Kephart.

The Sipes, both running backs, Shawn Sopic at quarterback and his older brother Brad at center, along with Dean Swatsworth at receiver, are starters on offense. Doug Swatsworth, coming off an injury, also sees time in the backfield with the Sipes. Sam Kepart is a starting tackle on offense while his brother Josh starts at linebacker on defense.

TOTEM POLE CONTROVERSY OVER? After a court injunction allowed seven suspended Brookville football players on the field for their game against Clearfield two weeks ago, another ruling reenacted the suspension last Friday putting the players on the sideline in the Raiders’ 39-8 loss Sunday.

Jefferson County Court of Common Pleas Judge John Foradora issued an order denying the request for a preliminary injuction filed on behalf of the seven players who had removed the school’s totem pole from the maintenance area on the high school campus.

With the ruling, head coach Chris Dworek’s 10-day interscholastic athletic suspension on the students along with a school board-imposed two-day out-of-school suspension will put the Raiders players on the sideline for one more game this Friday at home against St. Marys.

The Raiders are 0-3 and are coming off a 39-8 loss at DuBois Sunday. The Raiders trailed 39-0 at halftime.
