SEVERAL TEAMS LOOKING TO SOLIDIFY D9 PLAYOFF BERTHS

WEEK 7 PREVIEW - Oct. 15, 2004

By Rich Rhoades

For most teams, it’s only three games until the end of the regular season. As the season comes down the stretch, several teams try to clinch or solidify District 9 playoff berths.

The Four Cs -- Clarion-Limestone, Curwensville, Coudersport and Clarion -- clinched Class A playoff berths. In Class AA, Redbank Valley, Moniteau, Karns City, A-C Valley and defending champion Brockway jockey for positioning among the top five positions. All seven Class AA teams in the district can enter the playoffs, but the other two teams -- Brookville and Sheffield -- have losing records at this point and may not enter the playoffs.

Shifting to conference play, Clearfield sewed up the Mountain Athletic Conference-Seven Mountains Division with last week’s 28-14 win at Huntingdon. The Bisons have dominated, outscoring their division foes 171-35 in four games. They have one remaining division game with Punxsutawney.

In the Allegheny Mountain League, Coudersport can clinch the North Division title with a win over Ridgway and a Curwensville win over Port Allegany.

The District 9 League title is on the line Friday as DuBois travels to Bradford. Both teams sport 3-0 league records.

In other Friday games, Cameron County visits Kane, Ridgway hosts Coudersport, Brockway (4-2) travels to Otto-Eldred (3-3), Smethport (3-3) hosts Johnsonburg (2-4) and Sheffield (2-4) visits Elk County Catholic (4-2) in Allegheny Mountain League games. St. Marys (0-5) visits Punxsutawney (2-4) in the other District 9 League matchup while Karns City (3-3) visits A-C Valley (3-3), Union (0-6) visits Clarion-Limestone (6-0) and Redbank Valley (4-2) heads to Moniteau (4-2) in Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference games. Two other non-conference games are on the schedule as Brookville (1-5) treks to District 4’s Wellsboro (2-4) and Keystone (1-5) visits District 10’s Lakeview.

There are no Saturday games this week.

PLAYOFF HYPE

Two more District 9 Class A teams can clinch playoff berths this week.

Elk County Catholic (4-2) can wrap up a postseason berth with a win at home over Sheffield and a loss by Johnsonburg (2-4), while Port Allegany (4-2) can clinch a spot with a win at Curwensville Friday and a loss by Johnsonburg (2-4) at Smethport Friday.

Four teams have already clinched playoff spots including Clarion-Limestone (6-0), Coudersport (6-0), Curwensville (6-0) and Clarion (5-1).

Clarion-Limestone will wrap up one of the top two seeds by claiming the No. 1 seed from the KSAC with a win over Union and a Clarion loss to Clearfield. If that happens, the best Clarion could finish is 7-2 and the worst C-L could finish is 7-2. The Lions hold the head-to-head tiebreaker thanks to a 28-12 win over the Bobcats last week.

STATE RANKINGS

Two District 9 Class A teams are now ranked in the top 10 by the Pennsylvania Football News.

This week’s rankings have Clarion-Limestone at No. 6 (up from No. 9) and Curwensville debuting at No. 10.

Coudersport (6-0) remains in the Others to Watch category in Class A, while Clarion’s strong showing against C-L moved the Bobcats (5-1) into the Others to Watch listing.

Clearfield (6-0) remains in the Others to Watch category in Class AAA following a 28-14 win over Huntingdon.

TIDE ROLLING UP BIG NUMBERS

According to epasports.com, the Curwensville Golden Tide are the highest scoring team in the state and they own the biggest points differential in the state as well.

Thanks to last week’s 78-0 rout of Ridgway, the Tide now sit atop two statewide statistical rankings.

Curwensville leads the state in scoring at 49.2 points per game, just ahead of Bangor Pius X (46.7) from District 11, Gateway (45.7) from the WPIAL and Portage (45.2) of District 6. Clearfield (37.8) ranks 27th.

Curwensville and Clarion-Limestone rank 18th and 19th respectively in points allowed at 7.2 and 7.3 points per game respectively.

Curwensville leads the state in point difference at 42 points per game, almost a touchdown better than Jim Thorpe (36.2) of District 11. Clearfield is 24th at 29.7.

STATS AND STUFF

Clarion-Limestone’s Hayden Johnston approaches two milestones and it could both be attained in this week’s game with Union.

Johnston needs 72 yards passing to reach 4,000 career yards and only 23 yards rushing to hit 2,000 career rushing yards. That combination has never been reached by any District 9 quarterback.

Clearfield’s Josh Harbold is 123 yards shy of 3,000 career yards. He ranks second in District 9 with 1,029 yards behind Curwensville’s Nate Sipes’ 1,074 yards. Harbold is averaging 10.3 yards per carry while Sipes gains 10.2 per carry. Harbold rushed for 1,122 yards last year.

Clarion’s Chris McSwain needs 139 yards to reach 1,000 for the season.
