SHIPPENVILLE – Elk County Catholic senior quarterback Kyle Mahoney is the D9Sports.com District 9 football Player of the Week for Week 2 of the 2005 season.

He is the first ECC player to earn the award that is now in its sixth year of being given to the player with the best performance in each week of the regular season.

Mahoney played a key role in ECC’s 33-14 win at Kane Friday night that was a lot closer than the score indicated. He was 11-for-17 passing for 137 yards and three touchdowns while carrying the ball eight times for 40 yards and a touchdown. He accounted for both Crusader touchdowns in a pivotal fourth quarter throwing for one and running for another as ECC turned a 21-14 lead at the end of three quarters into the 19-point win.

Three additional District 9 players gave Mahoney stiff competition for the award including last week’s winner David Babcock of Coudersport (129 yards rushing, 4 touchdowns), Curwensville’s Nick Sipes (161 yards rushing, 4 touchdowns) and DuBois’ Ryan Liddle (101 yards passing, 3 touchdowns, 41 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns).

Babcock, Sipes and Liddle are join 12 additional players on the District 9 Honor Roll this week. The honor roll recipients are listed below in alphabetical order by school.

With Mahoney becoming the first award winner from ECC, 21 of the 26 football-playing members of District 9 as well as former KSAC member West Shamokin have had players named District 9 Football Player of the Week. In all, 53 football players have won the award including a few co-winners and one set of tri-winners. Clearfield has the most winners with eight followed by Clarion with six and Clarion-Limestone and Curwensville with four each.
