BROOKVILLE – Brookville’s defense came up big in a 14-6 season-opening victory over Philipsburg-Osceola Friday night in Brookville.

The Raiders (1-0) score both of their touchdown off turnovers while holding P-O to 127 yards of offense on the night.

Brookville scored twice in the second quarter and then had to sweat out a late Mounties rally that started when Ryan Marcinko’s blocked punt set up his own 2-yard TD run with 2:04 left in the game.

But P-O’s onside kick attempt failed and the Raiders, the defending District 9 Class AA champions, ran out the clock.

The Raiders first touchdown was set up by a Travis Diener fimbled recovery and returm that set Brookville up deep in Mountie territory.

P-O had mounted a 13-play, 60-yard drive to the Brookville 29, but on a fourth-and-9 play, Justin Smith forced a fumble on a sack, and Diener picked it up and returned it deep into P-O territory.

Six plays after the turnover, Silas Wonderling scored on a 6-yard run with 9:52 left in the second quarter.

Brookville’s second touchdown also came thanks to a big play on defense.

Tyler Ross intercepted a pass giving the Raiders the ball at the Mounties’ 35-yard line.

Eleven plays later, Brookville scored on Joe Galbraith’s 4-yard run with 1:58 left in the first half. The Raiders then coverted the 2-point convesion making it 14-0 at halftime.

The only points of the second half came on solid P-O special teams play. Marcinko blocked Brookville punter Matt Berfield’s punt and Mike Supko returned the ball 25 yards to the Mounties’ 6. Two plays later, Marcinko found the end zone.

P-O struggled offensively, managing just 37 yards on 26 carries.

Brookville outgained P-O, 264-127, but failed to score on three successive drives inside the Mounties’ 30-yard line in the second half.

Brookville returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday at Clearfield in the D9 League opener for the Raiders.
