DUBOIS 34, PUNXSUTAWNEY 7

Sept. 9, 2005

DuBOIS — Senior quarterback Ryan Liddle had a hand in all five of DuBois’ touchdowns in a 34-7 win over the visiting Punxsutawney Chucks in its home-opener at E.J. Mansell Stadium.

Liddle passed for three touchdowns and ran for two others in a game that DuBois could have named the score, as the Beavers led 21-0 by the end of the first quarter and cruised to the win in the 90th meeting between longtime rivals.

The Beavers scored on their first four drives and five of their first six possessions, turned the ball over at the Chucks’ 3 on an interception and missed two field goals. Only on their final possession, with the reserves in, did DuBois not threaten to score.

DuBois (2-0 overall, 1-0 District 9 League) did not punt and finished with 363 yards of offense.

Led by Liddle, the Beavers struck early and often. He completed 8 of 11 passes for 101 yards and rushed for 41 yards, all of it coming on the two touchdown runs of 25 and 16 yards.

“I’ve said and I’ll say it again,” DuBois head coach Jason Shilala said. “When (Ryan) comes out to play, people are going to be saying ‘Where has he been?’ Not only can he throw, he can run. Last week, he showed people his other dimension. He’s just a heck of an asset and I’m glad he’s on my team, not on the opposing team.”

So far this year, Liddle has completed 69 percent of his passes for 271 yards and six touchdowns.

The Beavers took the opening kickoff and went 54 yards on six plays to score on Liddle’s 9-yard scoring pass to Taylor Kriner. A 30-yard run by Rob Hanzely helped set up the score. He finished with 104 yards on 15 carries and also blocked a punt.

After holding Punxsy on a three-and-out possession, the Beavers scored again on Liddle’s 7-yard pass to senior wingback Adam Lawrence.

Another quick stop of Punxsutawney led to the Beavers’ third touchdown of the first quarter on a short three-play, 20-yard drive that started after Liddle’s 18-yard punt return and ended with Liddle’s 25-yard scamper through the middle around lunging Chucks’ defenders.

DuBois kept it going with a fourth straight touchdown on a Liddle 16-yard run with 8:51 remaining in the first half. A 26-yard pass to junior running back Mark Malacarne came two plays earlier to set up the TD run.

In the waning moments of the half, DuBois drove to the Chucks’ 22, but Liddle was picked off by the Chucks’ Jeremy Falgout while trying to hit Kriner in the end zone.

The final score came on the Beavers’ first possession of the second half. Hanzely’s blocked punt gave the Beavers the ball at the Chucks’ 7, and after a holding penalty, Liddle hit Malacarne for a 27-yard TD pass with 8:49 left in the third quarter.

The point-after kick never got off because of a muffed snap.

DuBois got some opportunities to kick field goals on its next two possessions with new kicker D.J. Smith, but he missed a 29-yarder and a had a 19-yard attempt blocked.

DuBois limited Punxsutawney to 168 yards of offense and sacked sophomore quarterback Zac Smith three times and intercepted him once.

The Chucks (0-2, 0-1) scored their first points of the season on Smith’s 19-yard pass to fellow sophomore Mike Cook with 2:33 left in the game.
Punxsutawney, a young squad also playing under a first-year head coach in Blake Moilan, had clearly improved from last week’s 37-0 loss to Bellefonte.
