Story courtesy of Paul Heimel PORT ALLEGANY – Sophomore quarterback Brian "Boomer" Wetzel fired a pair of touchdowns passes, senior tailback David Babcock scored his ninth touchdown of the season and the Coudersport defense recorded five sacks in a 18-0 victory at Port Allegany Saturday afternoon. The Falcons (3-0 overall, 3-0 AML North) held Port Allegany (2-1, 2-1) to 30 yards on the ground and 149 yards in the game while overcoming some nagging injuries and nine penalties to win an important AML North battle. Coudersport has now won 25 of its past 27 AML League games with the only two loses coming in the AML Title Game (2004 & 2003) while beating fellow AML North opponents in 18 straight games now last losing to an AML North foe Sept. 6, 2002, 21-14 to Eisenhower. Wetzel, who finished an unofficial 5-for-7 for 100 yards with an interception and two touchdowns connected on scoring passes to Sam Decker and Logan Hathaway in a span of just over three minutes in the second quarter giving the Falcons a 18-0 halftime lead. Babcock, who finished unofficially with 15 carries for 76 yards, got the scoring started for Coudersport with a 1-yard run in the first quarter that ended a 5-play, 26-yard drive that was set up by a poor Port Allegany punt. Then in the second quarter, Coudersport went on a 10-play, 74-yard drive that was capped when Wetzel hit an open Decker with a short pass and the speedy junior did the rest finishing off the 30-yard scoring pass. Another short punt put Coudersport in business at the Gator 34, and on the first snap Wetzel found Hathaway open for the touchdown giving Coudersport the 18-0 lead. Port Allegany’s best scoring chance came in the closing minutes of the first half before Decker intercepted a pass in the Falcon end zone to thwart the chance. Neither offense did much after the intermission. Coudersport’s offense was hammered in the second half when Babcock’s playing time was limited after the break because of an equipment problem and a leg injury. Port Allegany, meanwhile, had trouble protecting quarterback Willie Bova all day long while also struggling to establish a running game. Bova was 6-for-18 on the afternoon with 119 yards and two interceptions. R.J. Shively had two catches for 49 yards, while Cody Anderson had two catches for 46 yards. But Anderson, who was averaging 119 yards per game and 6.6 yards per carry in his first two games this season, was limited to 15 carries for 36 yards (2.4 ypc).
