ERIE -- Calling the DuBois Beavers' win at McDowell
Friday night is a big understatement. DuBois knocked off the McDowell Trojans, 33-21, to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1993. It was also the first time the Beavers beat McDowell in Erie since 1991. Probably most impressive was the fact that previously unbeaten McDowell was ranked 10th in the state in Class AAAA by the Harrisburg Patriot-News. DuBois also ruined Homecoming Night for the Trojans, who were coming off an overtime thrilling win over arch-rival Cathedral Prep the week before. McDowell defeated DuBois in last year's sub-regional playoff game, 28-6. The Beavers scored five touchdowns with four different players. Rob Hanzely scored two of the three DuBois touchdowns to rally the Beavers from a 21-14 deficit in the second half. His first came when he jumped on a loose ball in the end zone after teammate Taylor Kriner was stripped while he was battling for yardage on a reception at the 5:49 mark of the third quarter. Then midway through the fourth quarter, McDowell called on Justin Gomes to kick a 52-yard field goal. But DuBois came up with a block by Cody Royer. Mark Malacarne returned the block to the Trojans' 9, setting up Hanzely's 7-yard TD run to put the Beavers up for good at 26-21. DuBois put the game away when Malacarne scored from seven yards out with 1:33 remaining. DuBois outgained McDowell, 360-345. Quarterback Ryan Liddle completed 12 of 18 passes for 100 yards and rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown, a 38-yard scamper in the second quarter. He also made an interception that set up DuBois' first score on Adam Lawrence's 3-yard run in the first quarter. Malacarne rushed for 79 yards on 10 carries and caught six passes for 49 yards. Hanzely gaineed 51 yards on eight attempts. McDowell got 177 yards rushing from standout back Anthony Weaver, who came in to the game with 660 yards rushing. Brian Ras caught two TD passes and finished with 113 yards receiving.
