HYDE — As the DuBois Beavers were marching on to a seemingly solid District 9 League-clinching victory over Clearfield in their 100th meeting, the Bisons made things very interesting late in the game.

DuBois hung on to win 28-13 at the Bisons Sports Complex, improving to 7-0 for the first time since 1993 and edging closer to its first perfect regular season in 53 years.

The Beavers, contained somewhat by an outsized but hustling Bisons defense, were up 21-0 late in the third quarter. Clearfield hadn’t crossed midfield, managed just 83 yards of offense and four first downs.

But Clearfield (4-3) turned things around and got to within 21-13 and had possession of the ball in the DuBois red-zone before stalling. DuBois quarterback Ryan Liddle’s 20-yard TD run with 3:47 left in the game put things out of reach as the Beavers ended a three-game losing streak against the Bisons.

Liddle and Mark Malacarne each rushed for two touchdowns. Rob Hanzely (109 on 11 carries) and Malacarne (108 yards on 9 carries) eclipsed the century rushing mark while Adam Lawrence finished with 66 yards, which included a 61-yard run to set up the game-sealing score.

The Bisons put together a valiant effort, getting 167 yards passing and a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Andrew Janocko. Curtis Campman rushed for 81 yards and a score.

DuBois led 14-0 at the half, getting first-half scores on Liddle’s 1-yard run early in the second quarter and Malacarne’s 21-yard TD run one play after a Clearfield lost fumble.

The Beavers made it 21-0 on Malacarne’s 55-yard run with 3:21 left in the third quarter.

Clearfield then crossed midfield for the first time and scored on a 12-play, 70-yard drive finished off by Janocko’s 5-yard pass to Doug Kephart with 11:05 left in the fourth quarter. Campman had runs of 35 and 18 to spark the drive.

Then the Bisons recovered two straight onside kicks off the foot of kicker Lucas Feathers, who blooped the kick over the first line of the Beavers return team.

The first recovery set the Bisons up at the DuBois 41. The Bisons came up short on a 20-yard pass to Mike Morgan to the Beavers’ 19 on fourth-and-21.

But three plays later, Will Bacharach picked off a tipped pass from Liddle to Taylor Kriner and the Bisons had the ball at the Beavers’ 21. Two plays later, Campman scored from 11 yards out to make the score 21-13 with 7:52 remaining.

The Bisons recovered the second onside kick and moved as close as the Beavers’ 16, but two straight penalties backed the Bisons up and forced them to punt with 5:40 remaining.

The Beavers nearly fumbled the ball away again, but Pat Lydick recovered Malacarne’s fumble at the DuBois 19. On the next play, Lawrence dashed 61 yards to the Bisons’ 20. Liddle scored from there on the next play to seal the game with 3:47 remaining.
