COUDERSPORT 42, KANE 15

Nov. 4, 2005 - District 9 Class A Playoffs - First Round

COUDERSPORT – Senior David Babcock scored six touchdowns to lead Coudersport to a 42-15 win over Kane in the opening round of the District 9 Class A Playoffs Friday night at Coudersport.

The Falcons (10-0) will host the winner of Saturday’s game between Port Allegany and Curwensville Friday at 7 p.m.

With the win, Paul Simcoe’s team became the first squad in school history to run up a 10-0 record.

Babcock scored on runs of 8, 8, 16 and 4 yards, caught a 48-yard screen pass from Boomer Wetzel and returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown.

Kane led 7-0 early on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Zach Anderson to Paul Eastman. It was a short pass to Eastman, who broke a tackle and found a seam for the score.

The Wolves were threatening again when Babcock picked off an Anderson pass at the Falcons 27 and returned it to the Kane 43.

That set up an 8-yard touchdown run by Babcock that made it 7-6. A 35-yard pass from Wetzel to Sam Decker had put the Falcons at the 8.

Coudy then took the lead with 8:15 left in the first half when Babcock ended an 11-play, 67-yard drive with another 8-yard score. Wetzel then found Babcock for the 2-point conversion making it 14-7.

On the Falcons next drive, trickery played a role in making it 21-7. Decker hit Steve Bernard with a 39-yard halfback option pass to the Kane 16. That set up a 16-yard touchdown run by Babcock.

In the third quarter, Decker returned a punt 40 yards to set up a 4-yard Babcock TD run making it 28-7.

Decker then forced a fumble by Kane’s Kyle Oakes that led to the 48-yard screen pass for a touchdown from Wetzel to Babcock early in the fourth quarter making it 35-7.

Later in the quarter, Babcock picked off a pass and returned it the 30 yards for a touchdown making it 42-7.

Oakes made it close with a 3-yard run in the final minutes.

Caleb Morris’ kicking played a big role in the game as well, as his long kickoff and well-place punts gave the Wolves miserable field position all game long.

Babcock ran 16 times for 117 yards to lead a balanced Coudy attack, while Wetzel was 3 of 4 passing for 108 yards.

Anderson, a sophomore, was 22-for-35 passing for 321 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Oakes ran 12 times for 59 yards. John Bizzak had seven grabs for 138 yards while Eastman had two for 86 and the score.
