MONITEAU 35, BROOKVILLE 25

Nov. 4, 2005 - District 9 Class AA Playoffs - First Round

By Rich Rhoades

BROOKVILLE – Matt Schandelmeier and Garth Kohlmeyer each ran for two touchdowns as Moniteau scored twice in the first two minutes on its way to a 35-25 win over Brookville in the preliminary round of the District 9 Class AA playoffs Friday night.

The win marked the first-ever postseason victory for the Warriors (5-5), who were eliminated by Brookville (4-6) in last year’s preliminary round game at Moniteau.

Moniteau also turned two Brookville turnovers into scores and got a game-opening 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Adam Cousins.

The Warriors advance to the semifinals against Karns City next Friday. Moniteau dropped a 10-0 decision at home to the arch-rival Gremlins back on Oct. 14.

For Brookville, the defending Class AA champions, it’s not home sweet home in the playoffs. The Raiders dropped their third straight home playoff game and haven’t won at home since a 1999 semifinal win against Brockway.

Brookville did out gain Moniteau 299-167, but played behind the eight-ball all night thanks to the Warriors, who won the battles in the turnover department, special teams and field position.

The Raiders had a 31-yard TD run by Max Kutz called back on a holding penalty and were stuffed by the Warriors on three two-point conversion runs.

Kutz led all rushers with 135 yards on 23 carries. He scored twice on runs of 2 and 7 yards. Moniteau’s Schandelmeier gained 89 on 20 carries and scored on runs of 5 and 2 yards.

Following Cousins’ kick return, the Raiders appeared to get the short-end on a highly questionable call. On third-and-11 and in shotgun formation, Raiders quarterback Korey Brownlee threw a quick-out pass to Tyler Ross who took a step back from the line of scrimmage. The throw sailed high and through Ross’ hands. Instead of ruling an incomplete pass, the officials ruled it a lateral and Moniteau pounced on the loose ball at the Raiders’ 14.

Two plays later, Schandelmeier scored from five yards out and Cousins’ point-after kick made it 14-0 with 10:04 left in the first quarter.

The Raiders got on the board late in the first quarter on a 12-play, 71-yard drive culminated by Brownlee’s 30-yard TD pass to Ross on fourth-and-12.

Brookville scored on its next possession on a 7-play, 75-yard drive ended on Kutz’s 2-yard run with 9:02 remaining in the second quarter. The Raiders two-point conversion run to take the lead failed and Moniteau led 14-13.

The Warriors, who were limited to 29 yards of offense and two first downs on their first four possessions, went up 21-13 on quarterback Kohlmeyer’s 1-yard with 3:32 left in the first half. The drive started at the Raiders’ 26 following a Brookville punt out of its own end zone.

Brookville scored on the opening possession of the second half on another clutch pass from Brownlee to Ross on fourth-and-nine from the Warriors’ 26, finishing off a 9-play, 74-yard drive. Once again, Moniteau stuffed the two-point conversion run and still led 21-19.

The Warriors answered on their next possession, scoring on Schandelmeier’s 2-yard run with 1:25 left in the third quarter.

Brookville threatened on the following possession when Kutz’s 31-yard TD run was called back on a holding penalty.

Moniteau put the game away when Ryan Protzman’s interception at the Raiders’ 25 set up Kohlmeyer’s 7-yard TD run four plays later. The Warriors upped their lead to 34-19.

The Raiders did score following Moniteau’s final touchdown on Kutz’s 7-yard with 1:12 remaining, but failed on another two-point conversion, which would have cut the deficit to a reachable eight points. Brookville’s on-side kickoff failed as well, allowing the Warriors to kneel out the rest of the game.

NOTES: After three straight years of playoff losses, Moniteau won its first playoff game. … Brookville’s all-time home playoff record dropped to 2-4. The Raiders home wins came against Brockway in 1999 and Central Cambria in the 1996 District 6-9 Class AAA playoffs. … Ross had four catches for 93 yards to lead the Raiders. … Moniteau’s Protzman averaged 39 yards on five punts.
