PERRY 55, CLEARFIELD 14

Nov. 18, 2005 - PIAA Class AAA Playoffs - First Round

By Chris Rossetti

CLARION – Clearfield hadn’t seen anything like the speed Perry has before Friday night’s PIAA Class AAA First Round game at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium.

That speed proved to be the difference in a 55-14 Commodores (11-1) win over the District 9 champion Bisons (6-5).

"We knew what we were up against," Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko said. "It wasn’t like it was a shock. We just couldn’t stop them. They had four or five guys who were faster than anyone we have."

Two of those players faster than any Bison Friday night were running back Jared Williams and wide receiver Aundre Wright. The two-some combined to score all seven of Perry’s offensive touchdowns in the game.

Williams ran the ball 11 times for 160 yards and five touchdowns, while Wright had three catches for 72 yards and two touchdowns.

"Luckily, we got our speed guys out in the open," Perry head coach Bill Gallagher said. "We thought that was a big difference."

The big difference in the game was the big plays that allowed Perry to score 55 points despite being out possessed by Clearfield 31:56 to 16:04.

The Commodores scored on four offensive plays of 20 or more yards while having a few other long plays not go for touchdowns.

"I really believe if we would have made a couple of more plays in the first half, they won’t have had as much momentum," Janocko said. "We can compete with just about anybody at our level, but when you get four or five guys speed-wide, we had a little bit of a tough time. I’m very happy with out season. I’m very happy with our program and where we’re at. We’re not that far away."

Clearfield kept it close for a quarter and trailed just 13-0 at the end of the first 12 minutes on two Williams’ touchdowns for the Commodores (7-yard run, 86-yard run).

But things went South in a hurry in a second quarter that saw Perry score 42 unanswered points.

"We just got off to a quick start," Gallagher said. "Sometimes that is just hard to overcome."

Williams got things started in the second quarter with a 4-yard scoring run just four seconds into the quarter. The touchdown capped a 7-play, 99-yard drive for the Commodores.

That drive was highlighted by an 85-yard run by Nolen. Nolen looked like he was pinned deep in his own territory before completely reversing field and breaking free. Then around midfield, he started to weave his way through Clearfield defenders before finally running out of steam at the 4-yard line.

The snowball started rolling down hill for the Bisons on their next possession when Curtis Campman fumbled the return untouched allowing Perry to take over at the Bison 15.

That set up another highlight play for the Commodores when Aundre Wright made a spectacular running, diving catch in the end zone to make it 26-0 Perry.

Wright had a nice night catching three passes for 76 yards.

Williams made it 33-0 with his fourth touchdown run of the night – a 50-yard burst – two minutes later.

Harold Tardy then intercepted a Janocko pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown making it 40-0 with 9:24 to play in the half. Tardy had two interceptions and four pass breakups in the half.

A miscue by Clearfield punter Jury made it 42-0. Jury caught a punt snap standing out of bounds at the back of the end zone for a safety.

After the ensuing free kick, Wright scored his second touchdown on a 39-yard pass from Brentley with 7:33 to play in the half.

Williams then capped off Perry’s scoring with a 21-yard run 34 seconds later making it 55-0.

Perry outgained Clearfield 381-62 in the half despite holding the ball for 4:30 minutes less than the Bisons.

"We had our best week of practice this whole week," Brentley, who finished 4 of 7 for 123 yards and two touchdowns, said. "We were confident, and we knew they couldn’t stop us. We did a good job all the way around, I think."

Clearfield finally got on the scoreboard late in the third quarter on a 1-yard Shane Davis run. Then early in the fourth quarter, Jury caught a 2-yard pass from Janocko that was tipped.

Brentley, who finished 4 of 7 for 123 yards became the first player in the history of the City League to go over 2,000 yards passing in consecutive seasons. He now has 2,108 yards on the year.

"It is really a great honor," Brentley said. "There have been a lot of great quarterbacks in the league – Major Harris, Rod Rutherford. It is just an honor to do that."

Perry now takes on General McLane in the PIAA quarterfinals next week.
