CLARION – The District 9 champion Brockway Rovers fell victim to speedy back Jake McBride and the District 10 champion Reynolds Raiders in a 41-16 loss in the PIAA Class AA quarterfinals Friday night at Clarion University’s Memorial Field.

McBride rushed for 232 yards on 26 carries and scored on runs of 32, 47 and 8 yards as he pushed his season yardage total to 1,925 yards.

Reynolds (11-2) advances to the semifinals against WPIAL champion South Park, which routed Forest Hills, 63-22.

McBride wasn’t alone as teammate Korey Brown rushed for all of his 93 yards on seven carries in the second half. Brown scored on a 67-yard run. Quarterback Korey Shaffer hit Richie Burnworth for a 71-yard TD pass and Burnworth scored again on a 2-yard run.

Reynolds, which gained over 450 yards of offense, limited the Rovers (8-4) to just 26 yards rushing and 152 yards overall. Brockway quarterback Anthony Varischetti completed 15 of 25 pass for 126 yards and two touchdowns, but was also intercepted four times.

However, Varischetti’s own interception on defense set up his own 15-yard TD pass to Ben Donlin that actually gave Brockway an 8-0 lead. Reynolds scored the next 21 points to take a 21-8 lead into intermission.

On the first possession of the second half, Reynolds intercepted Varischetti near midfield and on the first play following the turnover, McBride ripped off his 47-yarder to up Reynolds’ lead to 28-8 and end any Brockway hopes for a second-half comeback.

Brockway’s season ends at 8-4. The loss also stopped a five-game winning streak for head coach Ray Reckner’s squad.

The Reynolds win marked the sixth time in the last seven years that District 10 won the first-round state playoff matchup against the District 9 champion.
