CURWENSVILLE 33, PORT ALLEGANY 0

PORT ALLEGANY – Curwensville inched closer to its second straight AML South title with a 33-0 win at Port Allegany Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Tide (6-1) must beat Elk County Catholic (5-2) next week to clinch the AML South and a shot at a second straight AML Title.

Against Port, Curwensville scored 26 unanswered second-half points to expand a 7-0 halftime lead into a blowout win.

Nick Sipes had another nice day for the Golden Tide running 22 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Sipes went over the 3,000-career yard mark in the contest and now has 3,150 yards rushing. The junior is only 1,544 yards away from Aaron Cantafio's (Brockway) District 9 record 4,694 yards rushing. 

Shawn Sopic 4 of 8 passing for 57 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Jon McGary caught both scoring passes and had three catches for 48 yards for Curwensville. Sopic also intercepted a pass on defense.

Port Allegany (5-2) managed just 102 yards on the day with Cody Anderson being bottled up for 38 yards rushing on 12 carries. Willie Bova was 4 of 15 passing for 44 yards and one interception.

Both teams have qualified for the District 9 Class A Playoffs.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 33, SHEFFIELD 19

SHEFFIELD – Elk County Catholic (5-2) clinched its second consecutive District 9 Class A Playoff berth with a 33-19 win over Sheffield (0-7) Saturday afternoon in Sheffield.

Anthony Mastrogiacomo had a big day for the Crusaders carrying the ball 15 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns.

Jordan Copley (6 of 15, 107 yards, 2 Ints, 1 rushing TD) and Eric Blum (5 of 9, 102 yards) combined to pass for 209 yards for Sheffield. The Wolverines also got scores from Randell Warren on a 60-yard punt return and Matt Bryant on a 2-yard run. Bryant had four catches for 65 yards, while Jason Borst had four catches for 86 yards.

JOHNSONBURG 6, SMETHPORT 0, overtime

JOHNSONBURG – T.S. Launer’s 10-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted Johnsonburg into the District 9 Class A playoffs for the first time since 1996 thanks to a 6-0 win over visiting Smethport.

Johnsonburg (5-2) was playing without Calvin Grumley, who might miss the remainder of the season with an injury. Without Grumley, the Rams managed just 184 yards on the night.

Launer ran 16 times for 58 yards and the touchdown, while Anthony Imbrogno was 8 of 20 passing for 84 yards and an interception. Launer also threw an interception and had two catches for 18 yards.

The Rams defense limited Smethport (2-5) to 230 yards on the night with Josh Switzer leading the way with 22 carries for 98 yards and one catch for 20 yards.

ST. MARYS 44, PUNXSUTAWNEY 20

ST. MARYS – Lucas Wendel was 9-for-10 passing for four touchdowns while running two times for 3 yards and a score to lift St. Marys to a 44-20 win over a depleted Punxsutawney squad Friday night in St. Marys.

The Dutch (3-4) built a 44-6 halftime lead that included two touchdowns in the final 42 seconds of the half.

Shad Boschert had three catches for 53 yards and two scores, while Brad Steinbach had three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. St. Marys also got a touchdown reception from Adam Cornelio and a touchdown run by Brian Tamburlin (13 carries, 76 yards) and had the benefit of two safeties.

David Pisano ran seven times for 66 yards and a touchdown to lead Punxsutawney, who was forced to go with third-string quarterback Pat McKee.

McKee had a pretty good game going 13 of 26 for 211 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Jeremy Falgout had six catches for 90 yards and a score.

KANE 46, CAMERON COUNTY 14

EMPORIUM – Kyle Oakes, Zach Anderson and John Bizzak combined to account for 420 yards and six touchdowns to lead Kane to a 46-14 win at Cameron County Friday night.

With the win, the Wolves (4-3) move closer to securing a District 9 Class A Playoff spot. One win in its final two games would secure Kane’s first postseason spot since they lost in the District title game in 2002.

Kane was able to pass and run on Cameron County (2-5) with two runners going over 100 yards each, Anderson throwing for over 200 yards and Bizzak receiving for over 100 yards.

Oakes was the workhorse on the ground rushing 25 times for 189 yards and three touchdowns while also catching one pass for 38 yards. Matt Mix added eight carries for 104 yards and a score. Anderson was 12 of 18 passing for 231 yards and a touchdown, while also running for two scores. Bizzak had five catches for 138 yards and a touchdown.

Kane led by just 12, 26-14, at halftime but outscored the Red Raiders 20-0 in the second half.

Cameron Clinger (3 carries, 85 yards) and John Malizia (14 carries, 56 yards) scored touchdowns for Cameron County. Abram Zoschg added two catches for 37 yards.

BROCKWAY 13, OTTO-ELDRED 12

BROCKWAY – Brockway sophomore running back Dillon Park had touched the ball all of eight times on the season going into this week. But the 5-4, 125 pound back scored the Rovers (4-3) only two touchdowns in a 13-12 Brockway win over visiting Otto-Eldred Friday night.

Park, who ran 13 times for 97 yards, scored on a 12-yard run in the second quarter and then caught an 18-yard scoring pass from Anthony Varischetti that provided the winning points late in the third quarter.

Brockway was outgained by Otto-Eldred (2-5) by 156 yards (382-226) but was able to squeak out the win after converting on 1 of 2 extra points while Otto was 0-for-2. Matt Ehrgott’s extra point following Park’s first-half touchdown was the difference. Otto failed on two 2-point conversion tries, while Brockway was 0-for-1 when going for two.

Travis Bair (11 of 21, 187 yards) threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Cory Brown (3 catches, 59 yards), while also running for a 2-yard touchdown. Chad Bova led the ground game with 16 carries for 141 yards while also catching two passes for 17 yards. Anthony Marrone added 53 yards receiving and 28 rushing.

Varischetti was 5 of 9 passing for 115 yards and the touchdown for Brockway.

REDBANK VALLEY 49, A-C VALLEY 6

NEW BETHLEHEM – For the second straight week Skyler Smith scored four touchdowns to lead Redbank Valley to a win.

The Bulldogs (4-3 overall, 3-2 KSAC), winners of two straight, rolled past A-C Valley (1-5, 1-4) 49-6 Friday night at Redbank Valley.

Smith, who rushed 13 times for 112 yards, scored three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter and added a 59-yard punt return in the second quarter to help the Bulldogs to a 49-0 halftime lead.

Mike Booher added three touchdowns for Redbank Valley including a 60-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Doverspike and two scoring runs.

Brandon Brinker added six carries for 76 yards for the Bulldogs.

Hank Heeter caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Brad Rembold for A-C Valley’s lone score.

KARNS CITY 10, MONITEAU 0

WEST SUNBURY – Karns City continued its dominance of rival Moniteau with a 10-0 win Friday night at Moniteau.

It was the Gremlins (5-2 overall, 4-1 KSAC) second straight win over the Warriors (4-3, 3-2) and their ninth in the past 10 meetings. The win coupled with Clarion’s win over Clarion-Limestone puts Karns City in a virtual three-way tie for the lead in the KSAC. The Gremlins finish the season against A-C Valley and Union, who have combined to go 1-12 on the season.

Karns City, winner of four straight, led 3-0 at the half thanks to a 40-yard Matt McConnell field goal. The Gremlins then put the game away with 36-yard touchdown run by Stephen Black early in the fourth quarter.

The Gremlins limited Moniteau to just 96 yards of offense on the night with Matt Schandelmeier, the third leading rusher in District 9 coming into the game, being limited to 17 carries for 74 yards.

Wayne Harris led Karns City with 16 carries for 40 yards, while Black was 5 of 9 passing for 40 yards.

BROOKVILLE 20, KEYSTONE 6

KNOX – Brookville (3-4) won its second straight game with a 20-6 victory over Keystone Friday night in Knox.

Max Kutz and Joe Galbraith combined to carry the ball 31 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way for the Raiders.

Galbraith ran 16 times for 67 yards and a score, while Kutz toted the rock 15 times for 69 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Ross added a 30-yard interception return for a score for Brookville.

The game was close throughout with Brookville not putting it away until an 11-yard Kutz TD run with 1:36 left in the game.

Korey Brownlee was 4 of 11 passing for 73 yards and three interceptions for Brookville with Ross catches 2 passes for 54 yards. He also was 1 of 1 passing for 32 yards and intercepted two passes on defense.

Mike Switzer led Keystone going 7 of 17 passing for 106 yards and a touchdown while throwing four interceptions. Alex Rowan (1 catch, 32 yards) caught the scoring pass for the Panthers (1-6).

Kyle McMunn added 2 catches for 46 yards for the Panthers, while Derek Swartfager ran 12 times for 37 yards. Keystone had just eight total rushing yards in the game.

LAKEVIEW 53, UNION 8

STONEBORO – District 10’s Lakeview (2-5) outscored Union 34-8 in the second half to expand a 19-0 halftime lead into a 53-8 romp over the winless Golden Knights (0-7), who have now lost a state-leading 28 in a row.

Treven Stoops and Jonathan Hogue each had three touchdowns for the Lakers.

Zach Himes threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Brett Moore for Union’s lone points of the game.

Colton Davis led the Knights with 16 carries for 73 yards, while Colby Davis added 15 carries for 52 yards. Himes was 2 of 4 passing for 54 yards, 1 TD and 1 Int.

Hogue rushed 17 times for 177 yards to lead Lakeview.
