COUDERSPORT-PORT ALLEGANY HIGHLIGHTS WEEK 3 GAMES

WEEK 3 PREVIEW - Sept. 16-17, 2005

By Rich Rhoades

Nine teams in District 9 still own perfect records after two weeks. It’s guaranteed to go down by only one number as just one matchup of 2-0 D-9 teams is among the 14 games on the schedule this weekend.

That matchup -- Coudersport at Port Allegany Saturday afternoon -- is the game of the week in the district. Why? It’s very likely that the Falcons-Gators winner will win the Allegheny Mountain League North Division title.

Even though it’s early, Coudersport and Port Allegany sit atop the AML North as usual. The last three years, Coudersport and Port Allegany have finished 1-2 with the Falcons winning the last three division titles. Last year, Coudersport blanked Port, 21-0.

Statistically, the teams are close, averaging about 250 yards rushing per game. Coudersport’s David Babcock (311 yards, 7 TDs) and Port’s Cody Anderson (238-3) rank second and seventh respectively in D-9 rushing.

Port has a little stronger passing game, led by quarterback Willie Bova (193 yards, 3 TDs). Coudy’s Boomer Wetzel hasn’t been called on to pass much, just 11 attempts in the first two games.

Coudersport has opened with wins over Johnsonburg (26-18) and Cameron County (44-21) while Port blanked Ridgway (31-0) and beat Smethport (28-13).

The Falcons at the Gators game is one of three games on the docket for Saturday as Sheffield hosts Smethport in another afternoon game. Brockway plays at Elk County Catholic in an interesting AML-South matchup Saturday night.

All the other games will be played Friday night as Johnsonburg (1-1) visits Curwensville (2-0), Cameron County (0-2) hosts Otto-Eldred (1-1) and Kane (1-1) visits Ridgway (0-2) in AML games. Curwensville’s matchup with Johnsonburg could be one to watch, considering the Rams’ effort against Coudersport in Week 1.

In the District 9 League, DuBois (2-0) visits Brookville (1-1) in what is usually a spirited matchup. The Beavers could knock the Raiders out of the D-9 League race with a win. Overtime-plagued Bradford (0-2) hosts Punxsutawney (0-2).

The Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference has three conference games with Clarion-Limestone (2-0) hosting Karns City (1-1), Moniteau (0-2) visiting A-C Valley (0-2) and Union (0-2) entertaining A-C Valley (0-2).

Clearfield (2-0), coming off a solid 21-7 win over Brookville last week, switches over to the Mountain Athletic Conference-Seven Mountain Division with a trip to Indian Valley (1-1).

In non-conference games, Clarion (2-0) hosts St. Marys (1-1) and Redbank Valley (2-0) treks to District 10’s West Middlesex (2-0).

OVERTIME BLUES — If you’re a Bradford fan, you’re wondering who’s to blame for the cruel joke. Two double-overtime losses in a row to start the season? You have to be kidding me.

It’s doubtful that it’s ever happened in D-9, perhaps the state, but it has happened and head coach Steve Ackerman’s team is probably anxious to win a game, and do it in regulation this week at home against Punxsutawney.

After dropping a 28-21 decision at home in two overtimes against Clearfield in the opener, Bradford fell to Olean, N.Y., 27-21.

The score was 14-14 at the end of regulation and both teams scored in the first OT, with Bradford finding the end zone on a fourth-down pass from QB Ben Walter to a diving Josh Holleran. However, in the second OT, Bradford turned the ball over and Olean scored on Justin George’s 16-yard run.

STAT MASTERS — Seven D-9 running backs are over 238 yards through two weeks, giving them a good start on 1,000-yard seasons.

Not surprisingly, Curwensville junior Nick Sipes leads the way with 320 yards and eight touchdowns. Sipes is 61 yards shy of 2,500 career rushing yards.

Not far behind Sipes is Coudersport’s Babcock with 311 yards and 7 TDs. After that, it’s Clearfield’s Lucas Aughenbaugh (269 yards), Redbank Valley’s Skyler Smith (268), Kane’s Kyle Oakes (257), Clarion’s Chris McSwain (244) and Port’s Anderson (238). McSwain is now over 2,000 yards rushing in his career (2,096) and has an outside shot for 3,000.

DuBois quarterback Ryan Liddle is off to a torrid start, leading District 9 in passing yardage (271), touchdowns (6) and passing rating (225.25).
