SHIPPENVILLE – Curwensville’s Nick Sipes and Ridgway’s Jerico Weitzel are the D9sports.com District 9
Football Co-Players of the Week for Week Five of the 2006 season.
Sipes had a record-breaking performance in the Golden tides 18-3 win at Johnsonburg Friday night breaking the District 9 career rushing record while running 27 times for 206 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 4,802 career rushing yards surpassing Brockway’s Aaron Cantafio for the top spot in District 9 history. To top of a perfect night, Sipes also kicked a 31-yard field goal. Weitzel was every bit as dominating in Ridgway’s 13-2 win over Kane. He ran 27 times for 269 yards and two scores and caught four passes for 42 yards giving him 311 total offensive yards on the night. For Sipes, it is remarkably just the second time in his career he has been named Player of the Week. He was Tri-Player of the Week in Week Three of 2004 with his brother, Nate, and Smethport’s Mike Mitchell. Sipes’ award marks the fifth time a player from Curwensville has earned the award Weitzel is the third Ridgway player to earn the honor and the first since Josh Shirey garnered the award in Week Seven of 2003. Additional top performances during the week came from Clearfield’s Adam Jury (151 yards receiving, 24 yards passing, 1 TD pass) and Elk County Catholic’s Eric Mastrogiacomo (180 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns). Jury and Mastrogiacomo join 14 additional players in making up the District 9 Honor Roll this week. The honor roll recipients are listed below in alphabetical order by school.
