COUDERSPORT – Coudersport will look to continue District 9’s recent Class A playoff dominance over District 10 when the Falcons face West Middlesex at 7 p.m. Friday at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium. District 9 Class A teams have beaten District 10 Class A teams four straight years in the PIAA playoffs and in six of the last eight seasons. Coudersport has been part of that dominance getting a 48-42 double overtime win over Kennedy Catholic at Slippery Rock University last season. West Middlesex, meanwhile, has lost two of the four games in the recent streak falling to Clarion-Limestone 40-7 at Sharon High School in 2002 and 33-14 to C-L at Clarion University in 2003. BIG RED HAVE DOMINATED BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL IN ‘06 In order to continue District 9’s winning ways against District 10, Coudersport will have to beat a West Middlesex team that has dominated on both sides of the football this year. The Big Reds are averaging 35.9 ppg while allowing 7.3 ppg. BALANCE KEY ON OFFENSE FOR WEST MIDDLESEX The West Middlesex offense has been a balanced one this season with 42.8 percent of the Big Reds total yards coming through the air. Senior quarterback Kolten Hoffman leads the passing attack completing 61.4 percent (113 of 184) of his passes for 1,917 yards, 18 touchdowns and six interceptions. Hoffman has plenty of talented targets with four players having 20 or more catches this season. Senior Lucas Allen is the top receiver with 32 catches for 589 yards and five touchdowns, while senior Josh Brown is adding 26 grabs for 499 yards and five scores. Junior Taylor Barris (6-2, 217) and senior Steve Andrusky (6-2, 222) are both big targets for Hoffman. Barris has 21 catches for 343 yards and three touchdowns, while Andrusky has 20 grabs for 277 yards and three scores. BIG RED HAVE FOUR RUNNERS OVER 500 YARDS Just like the passing game has many targets, the ground game is also well balanced with four runners gaining at least 500 yards this season. Brown is the leading rusher with 94 carries for 656 yards and six scores, while Hoffman burns teams with his legs as much as with his arm. He has 119 carries for 639 yards and a team-high 22 touchdowns, and Andrusky is adding 109 totes for 616 yards and 12 scores. Lucas Allen adds 87 carries for 585 yards and three scores. KILAR, BROWN, ANDRUSKY PACE DEFENSE On defense, West Middlesex is paced by defensive tackle Cody Kilar (125 tackles), middle linebacker Andrusky (104 tackles, 3 sacks) and outside linebacker Brown (93 tackles, 9 sacks, 2 interceptions). Additional key players on the Big Red defense include defensive end Marko Skarica (97 tackles, 4 sacks) and free safety Hoffman (71 tackles, 4 interceptions). RECORD SETTING BACK LEADS COUDY RUNNING ATTACK Coudersport can put up some points as well. The Falcons are averaging 28.7 ppg this year behind an attack that has become very balanced in the postseason. The running half of that attack is led by senior Chris Cavallari, who set the school record for yards in a season last week against Curwensville. Cavallari has 1,746 yards and 21 touchdowns on 281 carries this season while adding 16 catches for 197 yards. WETZEL, KINDER SPLIT TIME AT QUARTERBACK Coudersport has relied on two quarterbacks this season with both of them playing key roles while rotating on nearly every play. Junior Boomer Wetzel was the starting quarterback on last year’s PIAA semifinal team, and he has had a solid year going 39-for-83 for 620 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions. Fellow junior Justen Kinder has nearly identical numbers going 32-for-73 for 449 yards, six scores and two picks. Both quarterbacks have come into their own in the playoffs combining to complete 61.1 percent of their passes (33-54) for 502 yards, seven touchdowns and two picks. Wetzel is 18-for-31 for 231 yards, three scores and one pick, while Kinder is 15-for-23 for 271 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. HATHAWAY, DECKER TOP RECEIVERS The top targets for the quarterback tandem are Logan Hathaway and Sam Decker. Hathaway has 21 catches for 374 yards and seven touchdowns, while Decker, who missed half the year with an injury, has 12 catches for 215 yards and two touchdowns with all 12 grabs coming in the postseason. FALCON DEFENSE SWARMS TO THE BALL Coudersport’s defense, which is allowing 7.1 ppg, is a swarming defense that is led by Drew Levavasseur (7.4 tackles per game, 2 sacks, 2 interceptions), Isaac Cary (5.8 tpg, 9 sacks), Kody Frederick (5.1 tpg, 13 sacks) and Cavallari (3.8 tpg, 13 sacks). Hathaway is the leader in interceptions with five, while Derek Burdick, Colton Corey and Brett Whitman each have four. Whitman returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown in the D9 title game vs. Curwensville. NOTES – District 9 Class A teams are 9-7 all-time vs. D10 teams in the PIAA Playoffs … Coudersport has suffered two of those loses losing 21-14 to Kennedy Christian in 1994 and 35-21 to Sharpsville in 2001 … After beating Kennedy Catholic last season, the Falcons fell to Duquesne 33-2 in the semifinals … Coudersport is 3-1 all-time at Memorial Stadium including 2-0 this season … Cavallari broke David Babcock’s 1-year old rushing record for Coudersport. Babcock ran for 1,662 yards last season helping the Falcons go 13-1 … After going 13-0 vs. D9 teams this year, Coudersport has won 25 straight games vs. District 9 opponents last losing to Clarion-Limestone in the D9 Class A semifinals in 2004. |
