CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS – Union wins! Union wins! Union wins!

For the first time in 1,422 days, there is joy in Rimersburg during football season, as the Golden Knights snapped their 30-game losing streak with a 6-0 win at Cambridge Springs Friday night.

Union last won Oct. 10, 2002, when they beat West Shamokin 20-6. Since then, the Knights have suffered through three straight winless seasons.

But this year won’t be a fourth.

Nate Boltz scored on a 76-yard run in the second quarter, and the Union defense allowed Cambridge Springs just 145 yards of offense while forcing three turnovers to get the shutout win. It’s Union’s first shutout victory since a 3-0 blanking of A-C Valley Sept. 20, 2002 and the first win for third-year head coach Tom Kidder.

Thanks to the big run, Boltz led the way offensively for the Golden Knights with nine carries for 109 yards while also catching two passes for 23 yards. Zach Himes was 5 of 8 passing for 54 yards. Union had 191 yards of total offense.

Brett Switzer led the defense with 11 tackles and a sack, while Trent Switzer had an interception and Jake Myers and Matt Kelley fumble recoveries.

Cambridge Springs was 6-4 last year including a 33-0 win at Union in Week One.

The Golden Knights will try for their first two-game win streak since 1997 when they host rival Redbank Valley at 7 p.m. Friday.
