Owls win 500th football game

Some of the information for this story came from the Bradford Era

BRADFORD – Bradford became the 56th team in Pennsylvania history to win 500 high school football games when it defeated Olean (NY) 38-0 Friday night in Bradford.

And what better what to win that 500th game than against an archrival that you have 60 of those wins against? Bradford, which is 500-417-47, is now 60-42-7 against Olean, which played with only 19 dressed players Friday night. It was the 42nd shutout by Bradford, including four 0-0 ties, in the 113 years of the series between the New York-Pennsylvania border teams.

Bradford got good performances on both sides of the ball including 296 yards on the ground and 116 more through the air with junior quarterback Ben Walter turning in a perfect night going 7-for-7 for 113 yards passing. Walter also added a running touchdown while carrying the ball twice for five yards.

E.J. Moore ran for two touchdowns for the Owls.

Bradford led 13-0 at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 6-yard run by Moore and a 2-yard run by Walter that was set up by a 64-yard Moore run to the Olean 4.

Bradford extended its lead to 21-0 1:10 into the second quarter when Moore capped a 91-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. Taylor O’Brien then made it 27-0 at halftime with a 7-yard run with 1:10 left in the half.

The Owls quickly invoked the Mercy Rule when Nick Johnson scored on a 5-yard run with 9:21 left in the third quarter with Walter adding the conversion carry. A 39-yard pass from Walter to Tommy Morris set up the score.

Bradford’s second team took over with 6:37 left in the third quarter and produced a 26-yard Steve Butler field goal late in the fourth quarter to end the scoring.

O’Brien led the Owls on the ground with nine carries for 96 yards and the touchdown, while Moore had six totes for 83 yards and two scores. Morris had five catches for 65 yards, and Tyler Hopkins one grab for 41.

Britt Bookhamer led the defense with 10 tackles and three sacks, while Rob Pire added 10 stops and a 1/2 sack and Johnson seven tackles and a 1/2 sack.
