DuBOIS – Perhaps some numbers weren’t indicative of a 42-7 loss, but the struggles continue for the DuBois Beavers. The Beavers fell to 0-4 in a game where they turned the ball over five times, including their first three possessions of the game. Hollidaysburg, which evened its record at 2-2, turned three of those turnovers into touchdowns. Golden Tigers senior David Lafferty scored two touchdowns and made two interceptions, returning one of those for a score. Hollidaysburg outgained DuBois by a modest 232-149 margin. Yardage-wise, it wasn’t a pretty effort. Short fields off turnovers didn’t allow the Golden Tigers much room for numbers. Their offensive scoring drives were 32, 45, 25 and 64 yards. Lafferty’s first interception came at the DuBois 28 in the first quarter. He returned it to the Beavers’ 17, but the Tigers turned it over on downs at the 21. His second pickoff came at the end of the third quarter after the Mercy Rule running clock was in effect. He stepped in front of Beavers quarterback James Conway’s pass at the Beavers’ 10 and raced into the end zone untouched for the final score of the game. Lafferty got only three carries out of the backfield, but his final carry late in the first quarter was a gem. He spun out of several arm-tackle attempts and dashed 20 yards for the touchdown to put Hollidaysburg up 14-0 at the 2:03 mark. Hollidaysburg made it 21-0 before halftime thanks to a special teams mistake by DuBois on a Patrick Smith punt. Smith’s punt glanced off return man Kyle Bish’s hand at the Beavers’ 12 and rolled into the end zone where Tigers sophomore Mike Pechtold recovered it for the touchdown. The Tigers didn’t waste any time getting started in the second half. Justin Gildea’s 54-yard kickoff return set up Matt Wimbush’s 14-yard TD run two plays later. It was Wimbush’s second scoring run of the night. He led Hollidaysburg’s 157-yard running game with 37 yards on 7 carries. Wimbush’s first TD run started the scoring at the 9:47 mark in the first quarter. It came from one yard out and five plays after the Tigers recovered a questionable fumble by the Beavers on the first play of the game. The Beavers’ Conway threw a quick pass down the line to receiver Taylor Kriner, who dropped the ball. Instead of an apparent incomplete pass, the play was ruled a lateral and Hollidaysburg recovered the ball at the Beavers’ 32. The running clock began in the third quarter when Hollidaysburg scored on its longest drive of the night – 64 yards on eight plays. Brad Nocek scored on a 24-yard run with 5:22 left in the third quarter. DuBois then scored its only touchdown on Conway’s 30-yard pass to Taylor Kriner with 3:26 remaining in the third. Despite getting sacked twice for minus-15 yards, Conway still led the Beavers in rushing with 19 yards on eight carries. He completed 4 of 15 passes for 86 yards.
