JOHNSONBURG – With 206 yards rushing Friday night, Curwensville senior running back Nick Sipes became the
all-time leading rusher in District 9 history in the Golden Tides key 18-3 AML South win at Johnsonburg.
Sipes ran 27 times for the 206 yards while scoring two touchdowns on runs of 75 and 34 yards. He now has 4,802 yards breaking the record of 4,694 yards set by Brockway’s Aaron Cantafio in 2000. Sipes needs 198 yards to reach the 5,000-yard plateau. According to the Pennsylvania Football News, going into the 2006 season, only 39 players in state history had reached 5,000 yards. Sipes also kicked a field goal in the game helping Curwensville move into a first-place tie with Johnsonburg in the AML South. Curwensville led 8-0 at halftime thanks to a 75-yard scoring run by Sipes. A 34-yard run by the senior late in the third quarter made it 15-0, and Sipes then added a 31-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter to make it 18-0. Johnsonburg’s lone tallies came on a 31-yard Calvin Grumley field goal with 5:19 to play. Grumley paced Johnsonburg with 17 carries for 99 yards while going 5 of 17 passing for 76 yards and two interceptions.
