SMETHPORT – Behind an opportunistic defense, Sheffield (1-4 overall, 1-4 AML North) broke a 15-game losing streak with a 16-14 win at Smethport Friday night.

The Wolverine defense accounted for nine of the 16 points while forcing seven Smethport turnovers to get the victory.

For Smethport (0-5, 0-5) it was a tale of two halves. The Hubbers turned the ball over on each of their first four offensive plays and trailed 16-0 at halftime before out gaining Sheffield 186 yards to 29 and outscoring the Wolverines 14-0 in the second half.

Michael Bryant got things rolling for Sheffield returning a Devon Baumgardner interception 75 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Later in the quarter, the Wolverine defense led by Tim Fry tackled a Smethport ball carrier in the end zone for a safety and a 9-0 lead. Sheffield then made it 16-0 at the end of the first quarter on a 3-yard Jordan Copley touchdown run that was set up by another Sheffield interception of Baumgardner.

Baumgardner tried to bring Smethport back in the second half scoring on runs of 35 and 47 yards, but he threw his fourth interception of the game late in the fourth quarter.

Sheffield got the win despite managing just 147 yards of offense. Copley was 2-for-7 passing for 22 yards and an interception while running 10 times for 48 yards and a touchdown. Bryant ran 10 times for 59 yards and caught one pass for 12 yards.

Baumgardner ran 13 times for 83 yards and two touchdowns for Smethport and was 2-for-11 passing for 55 yards but four interceptions. Justin added 22 carries for 61 yards, while Kyle Nobles had 11 totes for 45 yards.
