PORT ALLEGANY – Visiting Cameron County rallied from a 12-0 halftime deficit to get a 14-12 win over Port
Allegany Saturday afternoon.
The Red Raiders scored all 14 of their points in the third quarter including a 96-yard drive to take the lead late in the quarter after they had stopped Port on a fourth-and-2 play from the 5-yard line. Patrick Catalano scored the game-winning touchdown on a 5-yard run with 55 seconds left in the third quarter to tie the game at 12. He then ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Red Raiders (4-2 overall, 4-2 AML North) the lead. Catalano carried the last three times on the drive for 18 yards, as the Red Raiders ran 13 times on the drive for 81 yards on the drive. Port Allegany also had a 15-yard personal foul penalty against it that moved the ball from the Port 33 to the Port 18. The drive was even more impressive considering on the first play of the drive, Chuck Holjencin lost three yards to the Cameron 1-yard line. That forced the Red Raiders to go 99 yards for the score. John Malizia was the other workhorse on the drive carrying three times for 28 yards. Catalano had five carries on the drive for 46 yards and finished the night with seven carries for 54 yards. Cameron’s drive started after Nick Nichols was stopped a yard short of the first down on the fourth-down play from the Cameron 5. Port Allegany (2-4, 2-4) had gotten the ball to the 5-yard line thanks to a 57-yard RJ Shively kickoff return to the Cameron 13 after the Red Raiders first touchdown. Two runs by Nichols and one by quarterback Derick Morey moved the ball to the 5, but the Gators couldn’t get the last yard needed. That failure was a microcosm of the game for Port Allegany which had seven drives inside Cameron territory including four inside the Raiders 40 and came away with just 12 points. Port’s first drive started at the Cameron 39 after a Chad Saltsman interception, but Port threw the ball right back to Cameron with Cory Smith coming up with the pick. Later in the opening quarter, Shively intercepted a Jordan Crane pass at the Cameron 15. This time the Gators cashed in – after losing 10 yards on two plays – when Morey hit Colby Brookens with a 25-yard touchdown pass with 3:48 left in the first quarter. Cameron then fumbled away the football on the its next drive when Nick Malize fumbled at the Port 24 with Guy Spees recovering for the Gators. Port wasn’t able to move the ball but got it back when John Malizia fumbled a punt return giving Port the ball at the Cameron 39. But once again, the Gators couldn’t capitalize, as Smith intercepted a Morey pass at the Cameron County 20. This time it was Cameron’s turn to miss fire deep in Port territory with Crane throwing an interception at the Port 3-yard line. Morey came up with the pick. Port then went on a 10-play, 97-yard drive that ended in a 10-yard Morey touchdown run with 1:16 left in the opening half. The big plays of the drive were a 31-yard pass from Morey to Tony Crum, a 19-yard pass from Morey to Mark Chelgreen and a 20-yard run by Chelgreen. Cameron got back in the game on its first drive of the second half when Crane hit Mike Malizia with a 50-yard scoring toss 3:30 minutes into the half.
