Raiders claim at least share of first D9 League crown since 2002 |
By Rich Rhoades
BROOKVILLE – Brookville Senior Max Kutz is on the cusp of a 1,000-yard rushing season. He didn’t get there against Punxsutawney, but he still made his presence felt in the Raiders’ 35-0 shutout of the Chucks in the Route 36 Trophy Game Friday night. Kutz scored on two second-half runs and tossed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Ross while rushing for 101 yards on 16 carries. Kutz, now with 988 yards rushing, is 12 yards shy of becoming the first Raiders running back to reach four digits in a season since Doug Miller did it back in 1995. Two scoring passes from non-quarterbacks put the Raiders up 14-0 in their first two offensive possessions of the game. Ross threw a 26-yarder to quarterback Shane Heschke to get the Raiders on the board at the 8:09 mark of the first quarter, followed by Kutz’s throw to Ross. Heschke, who completed 5 of 11 passes for 60 yards, called his own number in the second quarter and scored on a 1-yard run. Kutz ran for a 10-yard TD in the third quarter and added a 1-yarder in the fourth quarter to set the Mercy Rule running clock into motion with 9:57 remaining. In sloppy field conditions, Brookville outgained Punxsutawney 288-90. The Raiders, who improved to 7-1 with their sixth straight win, closed their District 9 League season with a 4-1 mark. The win guaranteed at least a share of the league title, the Raiders first since 2002. A Clearfield win next week at home against Punxsutawney (3-5, 2-2) would secure an unbreakable three-way tie for the league title between Brookville, Clearfield and Bradford. If Punxsutawney beats the Bisons, the Raiders would win the league title based on their head-to-head advantage over Bradford.
